Joey Porter, the new Miami Dolphins LB and infamous Las Vegas boxer, had his misdemeanor assault hearing moved to the 30th of May. Representing Porter at a hearing today, attorney Karen Winckler asked for and was granted, a continuance by the Judge.
Porter who recently signed a 32 million dollar contract with the Phins was at the Palm Casino when he allegedly approached Cincinnati Bengals lineman Levi Jones and then hit him. I say alleged only because video tape of the incident will not be released until after the case is settled, according to Edgar Thompson of the Palm Beach Post.
Porter is likely to face some disciplinary action from Commissioner Roger Goodell. How can he not? With the Commish’s new “character” driven suspension plan, Porter easily could find himself sitting out a game or two.
I’m all for the new penalties and the suspensions being handed out by Goodell in an effort to clean up the NFL image. I am not however in agreement with handing out suspensions before a person is actually charged with something…..so far it has been a wait-and-see approach with Porter.
I would love to say that Porter will only see a game suspension, but you never know. Porter has a history of rather, shall we say, childish behavior, and that’s just on the field. Porter has actually been ejected from a game during warm-ups.
The attitude is a much needed one for a Miami Dolphins defense whose image lacks an “in your face” kind of ego. For as good as that unit is, it’s still rather….pretty. Not since Bryan Cox has Miami had a trash talker the likes of Porter, and Porter, make no mistake, is one of the best. Yet, if he is found guilty or pleads out his case, the trash talking is likely going to have to wait. At least a game or two.

Well, if Goodell does his homework, he will suspend about 2/3 of the NFL. There are many who have been able to slide, and many who should be suspended.
I think that we need the “smash mouth” attitude that Porter brings to our phins. And as you stated, we do not know, nor does Goodell , yet what the outcome is. I hope that all goes well with Porter for our team. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not in favor of foul play among the NFL, just hope that this is all settled soon and for the good of the phins.
Who wouldn’t want Joey Porter? That’s my thing — the guy is an animal. He will make the defense better, that is for certain. But Goodell probably will suspend him for a game or two.
