Monday Morning Rant

Oh the week that was. In this Monday morning rant, mainly because I haven’t had the time to really research anything else, I will review quickly the week that was, or rather what I liked and didn’t like about it as it pertains to the Miami Dolphins.

I have been up in Ohio, Cleveland area actually since early last week. I did manage to blog the first half of the game before I got tired of the “father-in-law” computer. It is slow and out of date…and of course your not allowed to fix it.

Is it just me or does Ted Ginn look like he is lost out there? Someone needs to tell that kid that this is the NFL and that bouncing outside on every return does not work. There were a lot of people who supported this pick and even Cam Cameron said we would see an impact on special teams with Ginn back there returning. So far, I’m not seeing it. Still, it is early and he is a rookie.

Trent Green looked better in his second series and despite other opinions to the contrary, I actually thought the Oline played better. Sure they are far from being a solid group and they have a long way to go before anyone starts singing praises about them nationally, but, this is a young group of guys who from week 1 to week 2 made improvements. Now they just need to continue it into week 3 and 4.

John Beck is looking more like John Elway than Peyton Manning. O.k. the Manning comment was used by a writer over at the Palm Beach Post regarding the hand gestures at the line of scrimmage. The Elway comment is in terms of 4th quarter drives. Beck once again rallied from a deficit and led the team to a TD and a 2 point conversion. Someone should remind him that 1, it is pre-season and 2, it normally isn’t that easy.

Speaking of QBs’ if you have not had the chance to do so, you really should look at the high-light reels of Brady Quinns’ first NFL action. It was near perfection. I watched the game with my father-in-law who is a Browns fan and he came away impressed. Considering that he has relatively limited knowledge of football I didn’t have the heart to tell him that it was only pre-season against a soft defense comprised of 1st round cut fodder. Still, you can’t take away what Quinn did on the field. He controlled his offense. His throws were on the money almost every pass and managed the clock well. This is not an endorsement for having Quinn over Beck, but Quinn compared to Ginn? Quinn has the lead. However, there are a lot of fans out there who already are playing the “I told you so, Cam Cameron sucks” card way too early.

Wright and Mauia were both hurt. I have not heard about the status of Wright yet, I have only been back home for a few hours….I am such a slacker. Mauia on the other hand is sporting a cast on his wrist. It is a precautionary measure at this time and he is not expected to miss any time. He is practicing.

Camp will be breaking soon and the NFL mandated first cuts are only 8 days away. Teams will have to be down to 75, the final 53 man roster is to be made on September 1st. It should start getting interesting.

Where is Lorenzo Booker and David Sutton? Both have been the hype of training camp. Sutton was playing lights out at times and Booker was the “what a steal” of the draft only a few weeks ago. In Bookers’ case I know his girlfriend was expecting their first child at any moment. His absence in the Chiefs game could have been for that reason. I could be wrong, but I do not recall seeing him even at the game. Sutton on the other hand has been non-existent. I really thought we would see what he brought to a real game situation. So far that has been nil.

Finally, the one spot where depth was a concern, RB, no longer seems so dire.  The play of Jesse Chatman has been very good and youngster Patrick Cobbs is looking more and more like he could actually make the roster.  The problem?  The Dolphins will not likely carry them all and someone will get cut.  Ronnie Brown is assured a spot and it is very hard to imagine that Chatman won’t.  With Schlesinger in there as a FB and Mauia as well, Cobbs and Booker are the question marks.  With Booker being a 3rd round pick, it is hard to believe that he will not be on the team.  Something to watch.
