There was no JT. There was no ZT. There was no Holliday, no Green, no Chambers, Booker, Brown. Hell, there wasn’t even a Cameron. And yet, the Miami Dolphins managed to keep the game within a TD as they lose to NO 7-0.
Head coach Cam Cameron took the night off giving the HC duties to Capers and the OC duties to Mularkey. Capers came up strong with his defense, Mularkey fell again as the OC. Cameron advised his team that he would be in the boxes for the game so that he could concentrate on player evaluation and concentrate on who will make the team and who will not. He also was able to evaluate the talent and capabilities of his coaches.
In what is otherwise a meaningless game, Cameron’s choice made it that much more so. John Beck started the game and finished it. He had no heroics and through two interceptions. He was relieved by Gibran Hamdan in the 4th and after 2 series and two picks of his own, Hamdan was relieved by Beck.
Patrick Cobbs saw the bulk of the running tonight. He would be spelled by Lorenzo Booker later in the 4th quarter.
All in all, this game was nothing more than a tryout. The NO Saints came out with no Drew Brees but did have Colston on the field for the 1st quarter and played most of their 2nd stringers for the first half. Most of Miami’s 2nd stringers had the night off as well. Miami played NO with mostly 3rd and 4th depth chart guys.
Cameron will not get any passes for being in the box instead of on the field. A rookie coach will find plenty of media guys to question him in the coming days. His actions, are rather unorthodox, I seem to recall a guy who coached the Dolphins for about 20 years having a rather unorthodox way about him in the beginning as well. It is some coaches way of exhibiting control. Right or wrong, the game was about depth, and Cameron had a good view of what he wanted to see.
What this all boils down to though, is that for the Miami Dolphins, the regular season has just begun.
