Since the moment that Trent Green took Travis Johnson’s knee to his head, I hoped that Trent would recover 100% and that he would not take another snap in the NFL.
Like I said in the post right after the ugly play happened, it’s not because I don’t think Trent can be an effective quarterback anymore, but just because I want him to be healthy 20 years from now.
That’s why I breathed a big sigh of relief today when Miami put him on I.R. and ended his season. Trent feels physically ok and he feels like he can still play but the last thing he needs are more hits like that one.
20 years from now I want Trent Green retired and sitting in his home with his family and enjoying his life. I don’t want him being one of those sad stories like former Patriots linebacker Ted Johnson that we read about . The ones were a guy took too many hits on the field….and then is suffering the consequences years later.
That’s why the team took it easy with Zach Thomas after he suffered his concussion against Dallas. And that’s why they’re being very careful with Dan Morgan in Carolina, a favorite of mine during his days at the U, and a guy who has suffered too many concussions already.
The front office made the right call on this one. Trent’s season is over and hopefully he’ll make the wise decision and call it quits now. This is probably not how Green imagined things playing out when he asked to come to Miami, but he’s a veteran and he must understand that this is how this league works.
Either way, the positives that come out of this are that John Beck’s day as the quarterback of this team is getting closer and that Miami will now only have to give K.C. a 5th rounder instead of a 4th rounder for Green based on his playing time.
But yes, even more important than all of that is this man’s health and the right call was made today. Green said that he has talked with the team about staying involved in some capacity for the rest of the season and like Brian said earlier, that’s just how classy he is.
