According to the New Haven (Conn.) Register, Jeff Ireland has offered the head coaching job to Tony Sparano. Yes, I am well aware of the fact that it is New Haven and not Miami and not Dallas. In fact, the Miami Dolphins are denying the report as “100 percent false” according to Media Director Harvey Greene. And they should.
The NHR paper is reporting that Tony will accept the job at the conclusion of the Cowboys season…of course he will…but why NH you say? Well apparently, that is Tony’s hometown and he is a former player and coach of New Haven University. So even though it is New Haven…it still makes sense…”Hi Mom, guess what…I got offered the coaching job in Miami…what?…oh sorry, wrong number.” O.k. maybe not quite like that but you get the gist.
So now what? Easy, nothing. The Dolphins have had Sparano on their radar before they even had Bill Parcells. Parcells – Ireland – Sparano, they would have been the Atlanta trio had Wayne not stepped in. This was a done deal before Parcells was a done deal…only…it’s not a done deal yet.
The Dolphins will interview other candidates including the DC from Minnessotta, Leslie Frazier…so does this mean that the interview is bogus? No of course not…Frazier is a qualified candidate and sometimes things don’t go the way you want…might be a good idea to do your due dilegence.
I wish I could sit here and say that I believe none of that New Haven Register article, but in reality I just can’t. It makes too much sense. If you are taking over the job of General Manager for the worst team in the NFL…you tend to want guys under you who you know well and trust even more. It is good business…it’s just not business you talk about until after the conclusion of another teams season…until then…it’s just a rumor.

It’s official. You got him.
