There was in interesting blurb in today’s Miami Herald about quarterback John Beck.
The new Dolphins regime, which sees potential in John Beck, wants him to develop his body (size, strength, etc.), and Beck hired a trainer to do that. Beck — one of the first two players to meet with GM Jeff Ireland (Jason Taylor was the other) — plans to stay mostly in South Florida for offseason work, but plans a brief Alaskan fishing trip with Csonka for Csonka’s outdoor show.
”I was impressed how quickly the ball came out of Beck’s hands,” said former Packers GM Ron Wolf, who watched the Dolphins’ finale with friend Bill Parcells. “He’s got a very, very quick release and some mustard on the ball.”
I’m not sure how much of this may have already been known, but I think this is a good sign for John Beck and his supporters. The new regime seems committed to doing all they can to see if Beck really is a future star player and can lead the ‘Phins in this rebuilding process.
As for developing his body, I’m not sure how much can be done. He is already 26 years old so I doubt he will grow any in height. He could put on a little more muscle, but he doesn’t exactly have a big frame. I think the training is more for his physical toughness and learning how to better use his body as pertains to quarterbacking.
The comments from Ron Wolf are a good sign but should come as no surprise. We know Beck has all the skills it takes to be an NFL quarterback. The question is whether he can put it all together and develop the mental attributes that are necessary. Only time will tell.
If the Dolphins do draft another QB this year, no matter in what round. it shouldn’t be taken as a sign that they have given up on Beck. John will still have a tremendous advantage over any rookie QB, having gone through an entire NFL season, including some playing time and a critical offseason to make adjustments to the pro game.
