Seven-Time Pro Bowler Zach Thomas To Be Released

Jay Glazer, famous for unearthing the Patriots spygate tape, is reporting that the Miami Dolphins have informed Zach Thomas that he will be cut. You can see his article here.

While the news is stunning at first, it isn’t a complete surprise. He only played in five games last year due to a concussion, subsequent migraines and possibly post-concussion syndrome. He will be 35 years old by the time the season starts and he was also due a pretty large salary. It is safe to say that the new regime would rather spend that money amongst several younger players that will still be around by the time the Dolphins are playoff contenders.

Saying a player was cut never sounds good, to the player or the fan base. In this instance however, I think the Dolphins helped out Zach Thomas in some respect. Since he wasn’t traded, he can go to any team of his choosing, assuming they are interested. It’s likely that a Super Bowl contending team will offer him a significant (but not as large as he was due to make from us) salary for his services.

We should thank thank Zach Thomas for his countless contributions to the Dolphins franchise. He played with heart on the field and was the leader of many great defenses. He also made contributions off the field that won’t be forgotten. We wish him nothing but the best, and hopefully a chance for a Super Bowl ring next year, unless of course, he plays for the Patriots

Why have I got a bad feeling that he’ll end up in a Patsies jersey next season… :-(

  • George (MaineDolfan)

I don’t think Zack ends up in New England.  They already have plenty of 35+ year old LB’s.  They need to get younger at that position.  I love Zach….and hate that he isn’t going to be a Dolphin next year but this is a very good decision for our team.  Assuming of course Zach wouldn’t restructure and take a pay cut.

I agree  George. I don’t think the Pats will replace their aging linebackers with another aging linebacker. They need to use their draft picks and get people for the future. If i had to guess, I think Zach ends up in Denver.

why are we dropping all the players that mean something on the team? Zach is the heart and sould of the dolphins its bullshit.

Its very sad, he was my favorite player next to dan, I dont want him to go anywhere else i want him to stay with us or retire.  This really sucks :(a sad sad day

Im not the least bit surprised by this.  In fact, im more surprised it didn’t happen earlier.  Zach is the soul of the defense that has finally broken down.  He does us no good when he is rehabbing instead of playing.

It is a shame that he went out on someone elses terms.  Zach deserved a little more than that, but in reality, he wanted to play and there was no place for him anymore in Miami.  The bad part is, had the last two staffs would have got that in their head, we may have been able to trade him and JT a few years ago.

By the way, JT is next.  He will be traded in March for a draft pick or as part of a player for player trade.  I have it from a source that he has already asked for it.

If we can get an early to mid 2nd round pick or higher for JT, I say do it…If not, then it is not worth it…He has MAYBE 2-3 years left and we need to REBUILD…It would be a great step…but losing the veterans is tough

JT in a player-for-player is being rumored around a few places. Notably as part of a deal for a QB…
