MOCK 4.0 – The New Phinatic Mock Is Up

facebooktwitterreddit

So, the Combine is over, free agency is a day plus 12 hours away and my mock draft is out of date…well not quite, but it is time for a new one.  I started working on Mock 4.o and then I heard that a friend of mine had done one of his own.  In fact Shane is a regular reader of our site so I asked him if I could use his for our Mock number 4.  He thought it would be fun to do a mock for us, but he was very adamant about who he thinks is picking in the first slot.  So I figured why not, there are enough rumors out there to support a discussion on it.  So here is our Mock number 4 written by Orlando resident Shane Ford

(from Miami) Darren McFadden, RB, Ark. After a trade being on the table for several months the trade is finally pulled off and Jerry Jones gets to see his fellow Arkansas alumni holding up the Cowboys jersey on draft day.

Chris Long, DE, UVA. While Jake Long was consideration the Rams feel they must address the defensive line. Carriker and Long give them book end DE’s for years to come.

Matt Ryan, QB, BC. They toyed with trading up with Miami but decide to take the chance and stand pat at #3. It paid off and they get their guy. Atlanta can move out of the shadows of Vick and put a new face on the franchise in Matt Ryan.

Sedrick Ellis, DT, USC. With Sapp retiring Ellis is the spitting image of Sapp in his prime. They would have like McFadden or Chris Long here, but will be happy with taking Ellis.

Jake Long, OT, Michigan. The Chiefs are thrilled to see Jake Long still on the board at #5. They take no time in presenting the card to the podium.

Vernon Gholston, DE/OLB, Ohio State. The Jets are still building their 3-4 defense. Gholston will give them a pass rushing threat sorely needed from the outside.

Derrick Harvey, DE, Florida. They would have liked Cholston, but Harvey isn’t much of a fall off if any at all, They need to inject youth into and aging LB group.

Ryan Clady, OT, Boise State. Ogden is not getting any younger and it wont matter who’s at QB if they are on their backside. Many have Clady as the top rated OT in the draft and the Ravens can’t pass him up.

Glenn Dorsey, DT, LSU. The Bengals need to stop the run and be able to apply pressure from up the middle. They also need high character players and Dorsey fits the bill.

Leodis McKelvin, CB, Troy. The Saints offense is as good as any in the NFL, but they have to be able to stop people. McKelvin will step right in opposite of McKenzie and help strengthen the Saints abysmal secondary.

Keith Rivers, OLB, USC. The Bills could go in several directions but can’t pass up the opportunity for such a talent as Rivers. The Bills could also go WR here, but in the end they just can’t pass on Rivers.

Kentwan Balmer, DT, UNC. Denver had one of the worst run defenses in the NFL last year. Balmer will help them establish the inside against the run and should be able to get push up the middle in passing situations.

Chris Williams, OT, Vanderbilt. Carolina could lose both of their starting tackles in free agency. They need help at running back as well, but they can address that in a later round.

Jeff Otah, OT, Pittsburgh. It doesn’t matter who Chicago has at QB and RB, if the O Line can’t open up holes and keep the pressure off then no one will be successful.

Mike Jenkins, CB, USF. Detroit must address the defense. Jenkins will fit well into a Cover 2. He is a play-maker and knows how to get to the ball.

Dominique Rogers-Cromartie, CB, Tennessee State. The rumor is Antrelle Rolle will be moving to safety this year and Cromartie should be able to step in quickly and take over that spot. They could also look at RB, but it’s a deep class and can address that later.

Malcolm Kelly, WR, Oklahoma. Kelly will give Jackson another big target at WR opposite of Rice. Peterson is the real deal and add more weapons on the offense and Minnesota should be a force to be reckoned with.

Rashard Mendenhall, RB, Illinois. Houston is slowly building a good team in Texas. Mendenhall gives them a workhorse running back to go along with Johnson, Daniels and Schaub.

Brandon Flowers, CB, Va Tech. The Eagles could go many ways with this pick, they need to address OT, DE and WR, but when it comes down to it Flowers fits the bill for an Eagles DB. He is very physical and has the speed to keep up with receivers.

Limas Sweed, WR, Texas. The Bucs need a solid Wr to take pressure off the running game. Sweed should give them a big receiver with good hands for those third down and red zone situations.

Calais Campbell, DE, Miami. After the tragic loss of Sean Taylor last year they could also look at Kenny Phillips ate this point. However, they need to improve the pass rush and Campbell can help.

(from Dallas via Cleveland) Kenny Phillips, DB, Miami. At the beginning of the 2007 season Phillips was projected as a top 10 pick. He didn’t have a stellar 2007 season, but he still has all the tools. He falls into the mold of Sean Taylor. The Dolphins need a play-maker in the secondary and at 6’2, 212 lbs Phillips could be the enforcer the Fins need.

Branden Albert, OG, VA. Pittsburgh is losing Faneca and Branden is climbing the boards as the top OG in the draft. At 6’7″ and 315 lbs he is a mountain of a man that can help keep the running game and play action the focal point of the offense.

DeSean Jackson, WR, Cal. At one point Jackson was considered the top receiver in the draft. He measured in much smaller than he was sold, but the fact is he is a play maker. Vince Young need to have guys to throw to. Jackson has very good hands, and can spread the field.

Jonathan Stewart, RB, Oregon. Alexander may be cut, and even if he’s not his production has been rolling down hill. Stewart is a big back that can pound the ball between the tackles.

Lawrence Jackson, DE, USC. Jacksonville needs a pass rush to keep up with the Jones’s (Patriots/Colts). Jackson is a versatile DE that can rush the passer and is very good against the runs as well.

Reggie Smith, DB, Oklahoma. SD doesn’t have many concerns on their roster, but if there was one it might be safety. Smith would give them a versatile DB should be able to help improve the secondary.

(from Dallas)  Gosder Cherilus, OT, BC. At 6’7″ he fits the prototype OL that Parcells likes. He is a mauler that needs to work on his pass protection. He could come in and compete for a starting job or wait around and learn a year, then take over in 2009.

Quentin Groves, DE, Auburn. The Niners could also look at WR here, but in the end they need defense. Willis, Lawson and Groves would give them a very solid LB group.

Aqib Talib, CB, Kansas. The packers need depth behind Harris and Woodson. Talib should be able to step right in as the nickel back and take over once Woodson hangs them up.

The Patriots are put here as a reminder of how upstanding they are!

Dan Conner, LB, Penn State. Conner can play inside or out, and it’s hard to find a need with the World Champions, but Conner is a tackling machine that would just fortify the front seven.
