Mock Draft - Thehoggs.comSo, the Combine is over, free agency is a day plus 12 hours away and my mock draft is out of date…well not quite, but it is time for a new one.  I started working on Mock 4.o and then I heard that a friend of mine had done one of his own.  In fact Shane is a regular reader of our site so I asked him if I could use his for our Mock number 4.  He thought it would be fun to do a mock for us, but he was very adamant about who he thinks is picking in the first slot.  So I figured why not, there are enough rumors out there to support a discussion on it.  So here is our Mock number 4 written by Orlando resident Shane Ford

For 8 other mock drafts from the Fan-Sided Blog network, click here!

dal.gif  (from Miami) Darren McFadden, RB, Ark. After a trade being on the table for several months the trade is finally pulled off and Jerry Jones gets to see his fellow Arkansas alumni holding up the Cowboys jersey on draft day.

stl.gif Chris Long, DE, UVA. While Jake Long was consideration the Rams feel they must address the defensive line. Carriker and Long give them book end DE’s for years to come.

atl.gif Matt Ryan, QB, BC. They toyed with trading up with Miami but decide to take the chance and stand pat at #3. It paid off and they get their guy. Atlanta can move out of the shadows of Vick and put a new face on the franchise in Matt Ryan.

oak.gif Sedrick Ellis, DT, USC. With Sapp retiring Ellis is the spitting image of Sapp in his prime. They would have like McFadden or Chris Long here, but will be happy with taking Ellis.

kc.gif Jake Long, OT, Michigan. The Chiefs are thrilled to see Jake Long still on the board at #5. They take no time in presenting the card to the podium.

jets.JPG Vernon Gholston, DE/OLB, Ohio State. The Jets are still building their 3-4 defense. Gholston will give them a pass rushing threat sorely needed from the outside.

ne1.gif Derrick Harvey, DE, Florida. They would have liked Cholston, but Harvey isn’t much of a fall off if any at all, They need to inject youth into and aging LB group.

bal.gif Ryan Clady, OT, Boise State. Ogden is not getting any younger and it wont matter who’s at QB if they are on their backside. Many have Clady as the top rated OT in the draft and the Ravens can’t pass him up.

cin.gif Glenn Dorsey, DT, LSU. The Bengals need to stop the run and be able to apply pressure from up the middle. They also need high character players and Dorsey fits the bill.

no.gif Leodis McKelvin, CB, Troy. The Saints offense is as good as any in the NFL, but they have to be able to stop people. McKelvin will step right in opposite of McKenzie and help strengthen the Saints abysmal secondary.

buf.gif Keith Rivers, OLB, USC. The Bills could go in several directions but can’t pass up the opportunity for such a talent as Rivers. The Bills could also go WR here, but in the end they just can’t pass on Rivers.

den.gif Kentwan Balmer, DT, UNC. Denver had one of the worst run defenses in the NFL last year. Balmer will help them establish the inside against the run and should be able to get push up the middle in passing situations.

car.gif Chris Williams, OT, Vanderbilt. Carolina could lose both of their starting tackles in free agency. They need help at running back as well, but they can address that in a later round.

chi.gif Jeff Otah, OT, Pittsburgh. It doesn’t matter who Chicago has at QB and RB, if the O Line can’t open up holes and keep the pressure off then no one will be successful.

det.gif Mike Jenkins, CB, USF. Detroit must address the defense. Jenkins will fit well into a Cover 2. He is a play-maker and knows how to get to the ball.

ari.gif  Dominique Rogers-Cromartie, CB, Tennessee State. The rumor is Antrelle Rolle will be moving to safety this year and Cromartie should be able to step in quickly and take over that spot. They could also look at RB, but it’s a deep class and can address that later.

minn1.gif Malcolm Kelly, WR, Oklahoma. Kelly will give Jackson another big target at WR opposite of Rice. Peterson is the real deal and add more weapons on the offense and Minnesota should be a force to be reckoned with.

hou.gif Rashard Mendenhall, RB, Illinois. Houston is slowly building a good team in Texas. Mendenhall gives them a workhorse running back to go along with Johnson, Daniels and Schaub.

phi.gif Brandon Flowers, CB, Va Tech. The Eagles could go many ways with this pick, they need to address OT, DE and WR, but when it comes down to it Flowers fits the bill for an Eagles DB. He is very physical and has the speed to keep up with receivers.

tb1.gif Limas Sweed, WR, Texas. The Bucs need a solid Wr to take pressure off the running game. Sweed should give them a big receiver with good hands for those third down and red zone situations.

was.gif Calais Campbell, DE, Miami. After the tragic loss of Sean Taylor last year they could also look at Kenny Phillips ate this point. However, they need to improve the pass rush and Campbell can help.

mia1.gif  (from Dallas via Cleveland) Kenny Phillips, DB, Miami. At the beginning of the 2007 season Phillips was projected as a top 10 pick. He didn’t have a stellar 2007 season, but he still has all the tools. He falls into the mold of Sean Taylor. The Dolphins need a play-maker in the secondary and at 6’2, 212 lbs Phillips could be the enforcer the Fins need.

pit.gif  Branden Albert, OG, VA. Pittsburgh is losing Faneca and Branden is climbing the boards as the top OG in the draft. At 6’7″ and 315 lbs he is a mountain of a man that can help keep the running game and play action the focal point of the offense.

ten.gif DeSean Jackson, WR, Cal. At one point Jackson was considered the top receiver in the draft. He measured in much smaller than he was sold, but the fact is he is a play maker. Vince Young need to have guys to throw to. Jackson has very good hands, and can spread the field.

sea.gif Jonathan Stewart, RB, Oregon. Alexander may be cut, and even if he’s not his production has been rolling down hill. Stewart is a big back that can pound the ball between the tackles.

jax.gif Lawrence Jackson, DE, USC. Jacksonville needs a pass rush to keep up with the Jones’s (Patriots/Colts). Jackson is a versatile DE that can rush the passer and is very good against the runs as well.

sd.gif Reggie Smith, DB, Oklahoma. SD doesn’t have many concerns on their roster, but if there was one it might be safety. Smith would give them a versatile DB should be able to help improve the secondary.

mia1.gif  (from Dallas)  Gosder Cherilus, OT, BC. At 6’7″ he fits the prototype OL that Parcells likes. He is a mauler that needs to work on his pass protection. He could come in and compete for a starting job or wait around and learn a year, then take over in 2009.

sf.gif Quentin Groves, DE, Auburn. The Niners could also look at WR here, but in the end they need defense. Willis, Lawson and Groves would give them a very solid LB group.

gb.gif Aqib Talib, CB, Kansas. The packers need depth behind Harris and Woodson. Talib should be able to step right in as the nickel back and take over once Woodson hangs them up.

ne1.gif  The Patriots are put here as a reminder of how upstanding they are!

nyg.gif  Dan Conner, LB, Penn State. Conner can play inside or out, and it’s hard to find a need with the World Champions, but Conner is a tackling machine that would just fortify the front seven.

I would obviously love to see this happening in terms of Miami trading down with Dallas.  It will be a long shot for sure though.  I don’t know about some of the picks, I see Brandon Flowers more of a mid-second rounder right now.

I also am not sure that Phillips will fall to number 22.

It will be interesting to see if Felix Jones falls out of round 1 if Dallas moves up to 1.

    I like the draft…thanks Shane!

  2. OrlandoNole says:

Thanks Brian…I am sure it will change 2 or 3 times before the draft.I orginally projected Flowers as a mid second, but he fits perfect with Philly. They lose Shepard and Samuels signs with NO, CB becomes their top need.Phillips probably wont fall that far, and if NO signs Samuels, I could actually see them taking him at 10. I could also see Houston showing interest, but if Mendenhall is there I don’t think they pass him up.

  3. Brian Miller says:

Mendenhall should be there for Houston.  I had Phillips going to NO in my previous mocks.  I could see Miami moving out of the 22 or the 28 slot…likely the latter…for a 2nd this year and 1 next year.  Baltimore may be interested in jumping back into one to get a QB.

  4. OrlandoNole says:

I completely agree, and think they will move out of the #28 spot, but wasn’t going crazy with trade. I know you really didn’t want any in there, but I am confident the Dallas/Miami trade happens.I like Bruce Davis a lot as well, but if we get Calvin Pace, not sure we have a big need for OLB anymore.

  5. Brian Miller says:

No the trade you did is fine, I wasnt sure if you were going to go nuts all the way down…LOL

  6. AquaFrogsWiz says:

I do not like the draft at all.I would prefer to stick at # 1 or trade down to #3 and select Jake Long

  7. Brian Miller says:

Aqua:  I realize that having the opportunity to draft a top 3 players is special.  However, we have to look at this on the whole.  This team is missing key components at every single position on the team.  Which means that drafting say, JL will fill a hole on the oline, but there is still holes on the Oline.  If we can get two for the price  of one, I think it is pretty safe to say that BP has a good history of drafting guys that will impact the team.  Filling as many holes as possible through the draft should be the top priority of this team…IMO

  8. I really like Brandon Flowers, but his 40 time was really bad. That might knock him down to the 2nd round.

  9. Hunter says:

First of all I don’t think the ‘boys are going to be trading up it is just DUMB.  Secondly the Falcons would never move up to number one that makes no sense at all.  Also the Pats need Corners not a DE and Rivers is better than Harvey.  I also think the Titans need a tall receiver like James Hardy who should easily go in the first round after running a 4.46.  The Titans don’t need another short receiver they need a tall receiver for the redzone and first downs!

  10. jeremy says:

While were all dreaming of a new beginning for The Dolphins, why not dream of first trading out of the one spot with Atlanta, for Hall and their second rounder and then trading the three to Dallas for Barber and the two firsts. We`d have two starters (okay 1+1/2 with Barber as a platoon back, but a damn fine one) and five picks in the first two rounds, six in the first 64. We could really fill a lot of holes with all that volume.

  11. Spooneman says:

Trading down would be great but I just don’t see it happening. If we did however I would never draft Kenny Phillips. He is really slow, I believe Chris Long ran a similar 40 time and he’s 270 lbs.

  12. J Starnes says:

I would rather the Dolphins remain in the top five and draft Jake Long. They would probably have to remain at #1 to do this though given the fact the Rams would probably draft J Long. Left Tackle is a difficult position to fill and the Fins need one……..bad. I don’t think the Dallas trade happens. This one draft will not fix all the Dolphins problems. So get what you can……a solid left tackle – a solid cover cornerback, an offensive guard, a wide receiver or two, and if you get that, be happy. The Dolphins problems will not be fixed in one season.

  13. Brian Miller says:

JS:  There are a lot of fans who feel that staying at 1 -3 is important.  However, I tend to agree with the author of the Mock on this one.  Jake Long is a monster, no doubt, but most NFL pundits believe he will struggle at LT and project him more as an RT.  In fact, as a pure LT, some believe that Ryan Clady is a better prospect, Gosder Cherilous, and a few others are well suited to the LT spot as true LTs.  A trade with Dallas makes some sense as well because it gives us an opportunity to use one of those ones to possibly trade for additional 2nd round and maybe a day 2 as well as a 1 next year.  You are right, one draft will not do the trick, neither will one player.
