Dan Marino. Don Shula. The Marks Brothers. Larry Csonka. 1972 Undefeated Season. Names with enough Miami Dolphins lore to cover more than 2 decades of Phins history. Now there will be two more “Killer” names added to those who already adorn the stadium’s “Ring of Honor“. Bob Baumhower and Doug Betters.
2 of the mid-80′s fabled “Killer B” defense, both players played together on two of Miami’s Super Bowl teams. The Phins announced today that they will be a part of a half-time celebration on December 14th in a game against the 49ers.
The Palm Beach Post reported earlier today that the two venerable defenseman were elected after a panel of esteemed judges voted for their induction.
Players are added to the Dolphin Honor Roll by a committee made up of owner Wayne Huizenga, Don Shula, the three former Dolphins with retired jerseys (Dan Marino, Larry Csonka and Bob Griese), alumni representative Nat Moore, team president Bryan Wiedmeier and senior vice president of media relations Harvey Greene.
Baumhower, a 52-year-old former Palm Beach Gardens High student, was a five-time Pro Bowler who played 130 games from 1977 through ’86. He amassed 888 tackles and 39 1/2 sacks, the most among defensive tackles in club history.
Betters (1978-87) was named the Associated Press defensive player of the year in 1983. Betters, 52, recorded 16 sacks that season and 30 over a two-season span. In his 146 career games he totaled 65 1/2 sacks, which were second in team history when he retired. He now ranks third behind Jason Taylor and Bill Stanfill.
