So I am sitting in Orlando and there are two things I am watching, some tropical storm that they say is going to turn into a hurricane and ruin my day of golf at Disney on Thursday and the Miami Dolphins QB’s.
There is no question that this years starters will be named Chad. If you had any doubts, last Saturday’s game against Jacksonville proved that. While Penne will start the season and try and get this team some wins, there is little doubt that at some point we will see Henne. We are however, barring injury to the above mentioned two, not see John Beck or John McCown, who still have a job but on a rather short rope.
Neither player saw time in the game against the Jaguars, not even as the place holder on kickoffs. I saw McCown congratulating the team when they came off the field and someone said they saw Beck toss a “cup” of ice on Sparano after the win. Aside from that…nothin’.
Tony Sparano says that he may keep 4 QB’s. Don’t bet on it. Keeping 4 makes no sense especially when you consider that neither one of them have proved enough to warrant keeping. In reality, and this is only my opinion, McCown should be the one to go. He has had his time to shine in the NFL. He has not done so. He is the veteran who doesn’t get it.
Beck on the other hand holds no proven value either. What he has is unproven ability. Meaning while McCown gives you exactly what he has given everyone else, Beck has given nothing but hasn’t been in the league long enough and sorry last year doesn’t count, to know what the kid has.
For now, they both have jobs, how long that lasts is unknown. I don’t expect much playing time in the scripted 3rd pre-season game on this Saturday. We will see. So will they.
