When the trade first came down, the Dolphins had signed free agent QB Chad Penning10, the first thoughts were, “you have got to be kidding me!”. It was hard enough to realize that you were now going to have to root for a NY Jet that seemed to always find a way to beat us, but now you had to root for him because he was on our team and not on a team facing the Jets. The irony.
Well, there is more than just the fact that Penning10 is a Miami Dolphin. He is like that guy that spends 8 years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit.
Chad was a first round draft pick of Bill Parcells, but the problem is that after he drafted him, Parcells left the team. Leaving Chad…well, hanging. Chad was then thrown into cell block D. A life sentence without any real chance at parole. If you hated Chad all those years…and I did as well…imagine how Chad felt. Relegated to the surroundings of the slimy seedy NY fans and the ridicule of his own team.
Then, it happened. The Jets realized that Pennington wasn’t the guy and released him without so much as an “I’m Sorry”, something they should have done for locking him away for so long. Pennington goes out into the world and once again, in steps Bill Parcells and offers him the retirement community of Miami, Fl.
Pennington is not the Miami Dolphins savior, but he knows his roll, and that is to teach Chad Henne. If you see him on the sidelines, Henne is CP’s shadow. Pennington is always seen going over photos with someone, and that someone is usually Chad Henne. He is a leader, and he is rejuvenated…or so it seems. The real test comes opening weekend when he squares off against the Jets…don’t think Miami isn’t already picking that brain.
The game has taken on such meaning that CBS has moved it into the nationally televised slot of it’s Sunday lineup. Penning10 vs. Favre.
While the immediate future is not in focus yet, optimism is far better than it was only a few short months ago. The long term future is looking a lot brighter when you figure the dark ages of where this team has been.
