Dolphins Cut One Of "Their" Own

He was supposed to be one of “their” guys.  A safety that the new coaching staff knew well.  Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to beat out the current Miami Dolphins that were held over from last year, or the new ones brought to the team along with him.  The Phins today let Keith Davis go.

The move brings the Phins roster down to around 71, so many changes lately it gets a bit confusing.  While they are well under the 75 mandated roster limit, the cut down to 53 looms and it is very possible that the team is positioning itself to make more moves in the hopes of getting a few FA gems.  If there are any.

The cut seems to point to a roster spot for Renaldo Hill who has battled back from an injury that kept him out most of last season.  Courtney Bryan may also benefit as well as the Phins only have 5 safeties on the roster.  Yeremiah Bell, Chris Crocker, Jason Allen, and the two mentioned above.

Keith Davis was actually the Dallas Cowboys ST Captain.  He spent 5 years in Dallas, 3 under then HC Bill Parcells.  He only started 1 game last season but played in all of them.

It is a clear message to the rest of the Miami Dolphins, that just because your one of ”their” guys, your not guaranteed anything.

Davis had signed a two year, 3.5 million dollar deal back in March, his base salary was 650K.  I am not aware of how much if any guarantees he was given in terms of his salary.

Wow, kind of a shocking move with Keith Davis. I wonder what the problem was.

i think thats a good sign for the db’s that we have and also our special teams that we have as well.  hopefully the 3 and outs can come so ginn can get more chances at scoring other than at the wr position.  unless they see something on the horizion that will help us at another position other than at the db position.  maybe another hybrid lb in case porter has to be put on the shelf

I keep wondering just where people got the idea that loyalty was going to be rewarded over performance by Ireland and Parcells?  As if they’re going to say, “Well, Player X played better than Player Y, but let’s keep Player Y anyway because we signed him so he’s not a holdover from the previous coaching staff.”  You keep the players that give your team the best chances of winning regardless of how they were obtained.  Any GM or coach that doesn’t should be fired immediately for blatant stupidity (unless they work for the Jests, Patsies, or Jills, where blatant stupidity should be encouraged).
