The Miami Dolphins have just named their team captains for the 2009 season. Jeff Shain of CBS reports that Jason Taylor, Jason Ferguson, Joey Porter and Chad Pennington have been selected as the captains. Shain says the choices came down by virtue of seniority, but I still think it’s a good sign that Taylor has curried enough favor with the coaching staff in his return to Miami to regain his role as a captain. Taylor had little to prove to the fanbase. Even during his exodus most of Miami still held JT in high regard and the conditions of his return seems to have more than made up for the sting of his one year Redskin sabbatical. But the rift between Bill Parcells and JT was what reportedly drove Taylor away in the first place. Winning over a coaching staff hired and groomed by Parcells would certainly be the larger challenge for Taylor. From day one, however, JT has been in the Dolphins training program, going above and beyond and re-assuming his role as a veteran leader in the locker room along the way. When OTA’s started he swallowed his pride and took the ego-check that came with working his way up from the bottom of the depth chart. Then in training camp, taking advantage of playtime stemming from the Matt Roth mystery, JT took back his starting job. Now he’s a captain again. Seniority or not I feel like Taylor has earned it.
