The Miami Dolphins are set to open their 2009 defense of last years AFC East Division Championship on the road today in Atlanta. The Falcons come into this season with last years Rookie of the Year QB Matt Ryan at the helm. Today’s game also features the return of Jason Taylor after a one year stint with the Washington Redskins. For the Dolphins it marks a couple a firsts.
For the first time since Dave Wannstedt was the coach in his final year, the Dolphins will start the same QB in consecutive seasons. Chad Pennington is the first QB since Jay Fiedler to open consecutive seasons as the starter. Today also marks the first time since the year before Dave Wannstedt quit, that the Phins will open the season with the same offensive and defensive co-ordinators. The Phins changed OC’s and DC’s in Wannstedts final season, both Nick Saban seasons, the Cam Cameron season, and of course last year with the arrival of Tony Sparano, Bill Parcells, and Jeff Ireland.
On a somber note, the subject of much of my “media” ire, Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald lost his mother to a stroke on September 11th. Regardless of whether he believes that “bloggers” are sports writers or even professionals in their form of the trade, I want to send my condolenses to he and his family. No one wishes to lose a family member and our thoughts and prayers are with Armando and his family.
