LT Signs With Jets, Nose Tackle Becomes Bigger Need

With LaDaninian Tomlinson signing with the Jets for two years it looks like nose tackle is becoming a huge need now. Also with Jason Ferguson being suspended for the first 8 games of the 2010 season for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing substances the Dolphins will now have to look for a big Nose tackle. I know LT hasn’t been the same player he used to be but the Jets have one of the best offensive lines and last year they lead the league in rushing yards. Randy Starks and Paul Soliai performed above expectations last season but they aren’t the dominating, run stuffing force that the Dolphins need in the middle.

There aren’t any starting nose tackles in free agency since they were all resigned by their teams and Jamal Williams was signed by the Broncos so it looks like the only way to acquire a nose tackle is by trade or the draft. There aren’t a lot of nose tackles on the trading block so it looks like we will make our selection through the draft.

Dan Williams (Tennessee) is a first round prospect and many people believe that he will be the selection at #12 to Miami. If the Dolphins choose to skip on Williams then some other options are Terrence Cody (Alabama) projected 1st – 2nd round, and Cam Thomas (North Carolina) projected 2nd- 3rd round. Some late round prospects are Linval Joseph (East Carolina), and Torrell Troup (Central Florida) both are projected to be drafted around the 3rd or 4th round, or Jay Ross (East Carolina) who is projected to be drafted in the 5th or 6th round.

Whoever Parcells brings in we know that he believes he can start and be a force for Miami on the defensive line.

I am more worried about not being able to cover LT or any other running back in pass coverage or any TE as well. Last year the poor coverage of our linebackers in pass defense cost us more than just 1 game last year. NT is a definite need but will a NT drafted in the first round have the impact on this season as would an OLB or FS? Usually a NT takes a couple years to mature into the job were as FS or OLB drafted in the first round can have a more immediate impact. If NT is drafted in the first round is it going to help us this season or in 2012. I don’t have a problem picking a NT at #12 but he has to be able to step in and get the job done this season otherwise I might be happier with either a premier FS or dominating OLB considering how bad this defense was last year in coverage.

NT I agree will be huge for us “figuratively & literally”. I wonder though if we’d benefit just as well from the increased havoc a new OLB “or two” picked high in the draft would bring?

Same price as Jones at half the production. Jones had 1400 yds and LT had 700. Not all older backs can be as productive as RW. Not totally worried about the signing but with our luck LT will only have two really great games. Guess who against?

This is what I would like to see us do in the Draft.. I do like Dan Williams however I feel we can get a good NT later in the Draft..

Second Round: Brandon LaFell WR 6′3″ 312
Third Round: Cam Thomas DT 6′3″ 330
    Fourth Round: A.J Edds OLB 6′4″ 244
Fifth Round: Michael Hoomanawanui TE 6′5″ 272
    Sixth Round: Randy Phillips S 6′1″ 210
Sixth Round: Brandon Carter OT 6′7″ 374
Sixth Round: Joique Bell RB 6′1″ 233
Seventh Round: Steven Williams WR 6′5″ 197
Seventh Round: Abe Koroma DT 6′3″ 317

WOW, Brandon LaFell’s a big dude! LOL

I agree with Steven, in a draft that is reportedly the deepest at DT in history we should be drafting an immediate difference maker at 12. Kindle or Weatherspoon on the outside, Thomas or Mays at FS. Take Cody in R2 and Soliai can spell his fat can on 3rd down.

Oh and sign Javon Walker, please!!! Nothing past Bryant and Tate is worth the pick!

  • phinagan

What’s the thoughts on Odrick as potential nt?

Too small, projects as an end in a 3-4. We need a big sloppy mess like Cody to take up two guys a make interior runs impossible.
