Draft Wrap-Up: Wednesday’s edition

The Miami Dolphins draft wasn’t full of big name players but It was full of team captains and high character guys. Most of the players selected were on the defensive side of that ball due to the fact we had a lot of starters on defense not returning and due to the fact that our defense gave up a lot of points and a ton of big plays. The Dolphins had a solid draft and found guys that could be starters coming out on day 1.
Round 1: #98 Jared Odrick, DT/DE, Penn State;
I was shocked when I heard this pick, as soon as I heard Jar I quickly thought Jerry Hughes but when the commissioner said Jared Odrick I was dumb founded. Mainly because we needed a pass rusher or a nose tackle and Odrick filled none of those needs and I quickly gave this pick and F but as I did more research it seems that Nolan is going to use Odrick well and run a hybrid Defense were we will run a 3-4, and a 4-3 and due to Odrick’s versatility and his high motor he can play in both schemes.
Grade A
Round 2: #55 Koa Misi, OLB, Utah;
Koa Misi was a surprise pick to me mainly because Sergio Kindle was on the board but Kindles knee must be worse than we thought since many teams passed on him. He was picked by the dolphins because he fits their size mold. He has a High motor and is a smart linebacker. He can cover well and has great versatility. He also played in the 3-4 at Utah which should help him ease his understanding of the Dolphins defensive concepts.
Grade B+
Round 3: #74 John Jerry, OL, Ole Miss;
I really dislike this pick mainly because Major Wright and Chad Jones were still on the board. Were lucky we got Reshad Jones but I feel that we could of got a good offensive linemen later in the draft or even next year. Smiliey will most likely be cut and It seems Incognito will not be the starter helps this pick grade, if hes going to rid the bench this year it seems like a waste but Tony Sparano knows his linemen.

Round 4: #54 A.J. Edds, LB, Iowa;
AJ Edds was a former tight end, which can help him understand routes, but he doesn’t have many pass rushing moves. It has been said that he is a poor mans Chad Greenway. He has solid speed but lacks big time strength. Known more as a coverage linebacker he will be used mainly on third down and Nolan will get him heavily involved. Also is name is A.J. so we know he’s going to be solid.
Grade B+
Round 5: #28 Nolan Carroll, CB, Maryland;
Carroll is coming off a serious broken leg injury and it seems like this pick was a reach, but it has been rumored that if he didn’t get injured that he would have been a 2nd round pick at the latest. With Nate Jones signing with Broncos it seems like we need another corner behind Davis, Smith Will Allen and Jason Allen especially with Will coming off an injury and Jason not playing up to expectations. Before his injury it was said he could run a 4.3 forty.
Grade B+
Round 5: #35 Reshad Jones, S, Georgia;
Steal of the draft. Reshad Jones was projected a 2nd or 3rd round pick and we got him late in the 5th round. He is known more as a strong safety but he was most likely drafted to play free safety across from Yeremiah Bell. He is a hard hitting ball hawk and a good zone defender. Needs to work on his tackling and he lacks the quick feet to cover man on a receiver.
Grade A
Round 7: #48 Chris McCoy, OLB, Middle Tennessee State;
Chris McCoy reports are that he lacks functional strength & is not an every down guy. I believe he can be a great find late in the draft though. He is a good chase tackler and he has very good closing speed. He’s a speed rusher and not that great in coverage. He will be more of a role player or a special teams player in his first 2 or 3 years in the league.
Grade B-
Round 7: #44 Austin Spitler, ILB, Ohio State;
Spitler has good strength and underrated athleticism, he’s a hard hitter but tends to be fooled by misdirection plays and at the next level it’s unclear whether he can keep up with running backs out of the backfield. I believe we should have gotten a Tight end here because Sicko was still on the board.
