The Miami Dolphins are going to do right by Zach Thomas, at least in the eyes of Zach Thomas, some of the local media, and many many fans. The team has announced a 4PM press conference that will announce the signing of fan favorite Zach Thomas to a ceremonial contract and his retirement from the NFL.
Thomas who was cut by Bill Parcells and company two seasons ago has played for the Dallas Cowboys and Kansas City Chiefs. Earlier this off-season, Thomas openly criticized the teams handling of the Jason Taylor situation and slammed the team for not allowing him a farewell presser when he was cut. Something, this author fully sided with the team on.
Now, all that appears to be nothing more than water under the bridge as he prepares to sign his last contract and end a career that for all intent and purposes should never have lasted as long as it had. An undersized middle linebacker, Thomas benefited from a strong defensive front and a system that allowed him to make plays.
Only Zach Thomas and Jason Taylor remain from the Jimmy Johnson era and now, at least for Zach Thomas, the debates will begin on his worthiness for the Hall of Fame. He will officially be eligible in 2015.
Thomas played his heart out on the football field and left nothing on the sidelines, but in his later career, concussive injuries put Thomas on the sideline more than on the field.
Regardless of where he ends up in terms of HOF voting, he will always be one of the Miami fans favorites and history will always have a place for the “Little engine that did”. Thomas will likely have his name enshrined in the Ring of Honor during the season, perhaps it would be fitting to hold such an honor when the Phins play the Jets at home. O.k. that would likely be a cruel slap in Jason Taylor’s face.
Either way, today the Dolphins will do the right thing and send Zach Thomas off with the press conference he deserves, now that he is retiring.
Let the “Should Thomas’ have his jersey retired” debate begin.
