TC Historical High (sometimes low) Lights: II

Well with the first week of training camp over,  if you are like me, the excitement of the possibilities for the upcoming season seem endless!

Around this time of year, a lot of names get banded about, some well known some less so, but training camp has a way of getting us all excited over a particular player, who then sinks into obscurity or brakes our hearts. Take Travis Minor, for example, he had a distinguished college career and came with decent credentials, quotes like this heightened our senses and hopes

” he continues to show a nice burst through holes when he has any type of opening, breaking a couple of plays that looked like runs of 20 yards or longer. Minors best attribute is that he doesn’t dance around at all”.

He is not alone though, think of other guys like Eric Krumerow, John Bosa, Eddie Moore & Cecil Collins… enough said!

Some players show what they are made of from the get go! I love this career defining quote from Miami Dolphins All Pro, Bob Kuechenburg “you’ve got something special here” to Don Shula at  Dan Marino’s first practise in 1983.

What about Jason Taylor “a nickel pass rusher early on who could eventually bulk up and play full time”“something of a project.” This being said for who is possibly the best defensive player to ever don a Dolphins uniform.

The real truth about training camp is that anything can happen. Gems can dull very quickly, busts can turn it around in a heart beat, position changes, depth charts, particular formations and even the good old “if the face fits” , can all play a part.

Dolphin great, Norm Evans said it best after having been drafted in the 14th round, (20 rounds back then), by the Houston Oilers then finding himself on his way to Miami “I learned my rookie year, not to be surprised at anything”.

Thanks for reading another “Historical Highlight”.
