As talent has emerged around the NFL, I have often wondered how it is that other teams find these diamonds in the rough. We’ve managed to pick up those that are one-hit wonders, or those who have seen better seasons, but rarely a totally untapped and consistent talent. A notable exception, of course, would be Zach Thomas, a fifth-round draft pick, unbelievable in hindsight.
But now we have been given the gift of Davone Bess, an undrafted rookie in 2008. I was one of those that thought the Wes Welker deal was the worst in NFL history, but now our #15 is ahead of him statistically as of today. (I do miss Wes, but Davone has been somewhat of a balm). I’m sure there are MANY NFL teams scratching their heads and wondering why they didn’t catch him. Oh, I know why…because he can run the 40 in 4.35 seconds!
Last Sunday, in that amazing win over the Raiders, Bess showed his hometown what he was all about, and made sure that the 55 tickets he bought for local friends and family was worth the expense.
Bess watched the Raiders growing up, but now it is THEY who are watching him.
