The Miami Dolphins have something to look forward to that doesn’t involve San Diego, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, and Indianapolis losing. It’s the team sack record. Currently held by Jason Taylor and Bill Stanfill (recently enshrined on the Ring of Honor) at 18.5. Which means that over the course of the next three games, Cameron Wake needs to register 5.
If Wake can nail that down in the next two weeks against the Bills and Lions, he will be 3.5 sacks away from tying the league record of 22.5 held by former Giants DE Michael Strahan…yes, we have to count Brett Favres fall down.
For Dolphins fans it’s something to cheer about heading down the final stretch. There is irony to the quest that Wake is gunning for. Breaking the record in the same year that Stanfill goes on the ring. Breaking the record the same year that Jason Taylor moves to NY. For a former CFL star who couldn’t get the time of day in the NFL three years ago, the feat would be an exclamation point on an otherwise dreadful season. Once again highlighting the defenses accomplishments over the struggling offense.
Regardless of whether or not Wake can finish the season strong and break either record is not as important as the cheering the fans will be doing every time he knocks a QB to the ground. Wake has gone a long way to allowing Miami fans to forget about Jason Taylor leaving.
Let the “EarthWake” shake Miami!
