An Apology To The Readers Of This Site

They say when you cover a topic that the one thing you never should do is apologize.  I don’t know who made that rule up nor do I really care at this point.  What I do care about is this site, the Miami Dolphins, and my reputation.  Today, all three took a hit.  Two of which I could control.  To say I was wrong is an understatement.  To say my source was wrong would be allowing someone else to take my blame.

I reported it, not them.

The sports business is really tricky and unless your sleeping on a wall in a teams facility you rely on information that you can obtain through various contacts.  I have two very solid ones but in this case, one happened to be wrong and the other never corroborated it.  Regardless, I made the decision to run what I was told early and in doing so, put out information that turned out to be false.

It really doesn’t matter if Jim Harbaugh and the Miami Dolphins ever did agree in principal on a deal as I reported, I said they did and that’s all that matters.  The fact that news was picked up on a more national level is of no consequence considering the outcome.

I write this only to apologize to all of you who re-posted it, talked about, got your hopes up or down, or anything in between.  I suppose I will be a lot more cautious moving forward in what I post on site and how soon to post what I hear after I have heard it.  This was a resounding learning experience that I wish I didn’t have to endure but that is part of this game.

I hope that my apology is enough.  Thank you for reading this site and supporting myself and the other staff writers that work daily to bring you the most updated content on the Miami Dolphins.

Brian, you owe no apology. If it weren’t for you doing your job, taking the risks by reporting, people like me would know nothing. I appreciate your hard work. When I worked at a TV Station in Knoxville, Tennessee, I told our Sports Anchor that Bill Elliott would be driving the #44 and going on his own. How did I know that. I have family that works for him. I took them at their word. But as things go, he did not run the #44. I told my Sports Director, as I talked with my family on the phone about it. When it came down this was not true, I felt like a piece of crap. Would he ever trust me again. In fact, he did. He called me on another Nascar story and I was fortunate enough to talk to the crew chief, who is my cousin’s best friend. He told me a lot and he knew I was going to tell my buddy at the TV Station. It all worked out.

At least you take the risks, where many will not. We don’t know the whole story yet, so you may not be as wrong as you think you are. Again, if it weren’t for you helping me out years ago on a blog, I would know nothing. If I remember correctly you put a ? beside Sparano being fired. That means it is still up in the air.

  • Sneller

You’re human. Humans aren’t perfect(As we’re so seeing by Ross >.<) Anyway, really manly thing you did to step up and apologize and say you were wrong. Takes a lot of guts. Made me feel a little after this whole situation. Thanks!!!!

  • singunchaser13

Not for anything I am really rooting hard for Sparano now! I really wanna see im stick it to Ireland and Ross. Maybe this will spark Sparano. Your great Brian I love this site.

  • mlm92124

Moron, all the caps mean you’re yelling. Of course all the stupid foul language isn’t needed either. All of it shows just how ignorant you are and that everybody on here should take everything you post for what it’s worth…nothing!

  • mlm92124

No apologies needed. When you trust a source who claims to have viable info you run with it to get the story first. Even if the idea wasn’t to get the story first you still run with it because you trust that your “inside source” is being truthful and actually knows what he/she is talking about.
Hey, I’d rather see Jeff Fisher as the coach and not Harbaugh anyhow. I still don’t want Sparano, he’s damaged goods now after what Ross did. He wasn’t the right coach anyhow since he failed to make needed changes at the time they were needed. You don’t bandage an open wound after a person has bled to death. And you don’t keep players in a game and a coach on the team when they are failing to produce positive results.
Just like you, I wanted to see a change. So, you report what you hear to be true from those whom supposedly know.

  • G from Maine

    Yo B,

It’s not you that needs to apologize, it’s Ross! You should be getting an interview from him and tell him that his fans DEMAND it! It’s one thing to have a team that doesn’t perform to expectations on the field but to act in the way he has the past 2 or 3 days is just wrong. He’s the one that has embarassed us. We put our heart into the team on a daily/weekly/yearly basis and to make us the laughing stock of the league is a joke!

Keep up the good work, no need to apologize to anyone. Hell, you’re still performing better than most meteorologists! :-)

  • gman

BREAKING NEWS: A blogger has agreed in principal to apologize for posting a wild rumor as fact. The blogger will also attempt to shift blame by stating that although he does not blame his source, the source was in fact dead wrong. His secondary source will now become his primary source of NFL facts and rumors.

    Brian,

You do a good job of reporting. It was a mistake and I have no intention of holding anything against you or the site. I enjoy it and look forward to the continued daily updates. Thanks

  • DolfanNPA

It’s Ross who should be apologizing to the fans. Sticking with a below avg coach & an unproven GM instead of getting Cower and then embarrassing the organization by getting turned down by JH. Just goes to show how this organization has failed. It used to be that coaches and players wanted to come here – now even a $7M salary can’t convince somebody to coach this team.

They better get a top notch OC and QB coach to turn this around or Ross will have a lot of empty seats on his hands.

  • Brian Miller

Thanks all. Appreciate it. Don’t need to eat much breakfast this morning…there is still a lot of egg left over from last night…LOL

    • davessi

Apology accepted…you are only as good as the information you are given, but lessons learned I would hope? Review your sources and the accuracy of the information. Only YOU can determine the best way to approach that. We all come here to get the latest news on our favorite team. When that information is flawed or inaccurate, then why come here…we can just watch the 5 second reports on ESPN.

  • bahamas

    Brian,
No worries brov on the apology. I do have a question for you…
why is all the blame going on Tony? What has Ireland done to reclaim his job. It was the trifecta that built this team, so if Ross wanted a change, why not clean up and bring in Cowher?
I dont understand how Ross thinks Tony is the problem, yet is still wanting to keep Jeff.

  • Brian Miller

No One is blaming Tony. Everyone is blaming Ross…and rightfully so.

    • bahamas

But I still dont understand how Jeff Ireland is getting a free pass….
Is it because he has already conducted indepth reviews for FA and draft – and Ross doesnt want to lose that?

    • mlm92124

Part of the blame, at least in regard to what I watched in the Buffalo game, should be on Tony. He failed to make personnel and coaching decisions during that game that he alone should’ve. Players should’ve been changed during that game and Tony should’ve taken over offensive play calling. He failed to do anything to change what I, and all of us, were watching. Perhaps the back-ups wouldn’t have done much better, perhaps him calling the plays wouldn’t have changed the end result, but at least it would’ve showed he tried to do something. That’s what Tony is to blame for, not even an apparent attempt to change things.

  • Chris

Forgiven, but I think Ross caused this circus.

  • Brian Miller

I don’t know why Ireland got a pass. I don’t think he was to blame for this mess though honestly, I think that was more Parcells. But the way this has all been handled by Ross and Peterson, with Ireland in tow sure as hell doesn’t sit well.

Maybe they told him “hey, your safe but if we don’t land someone willing to work with you, then we will fire you.”. Beats me.

  • Built4Glory

I drop by once in a while but not as much as I use to. You screwed up. Babe Ruth struck out once. Your in good company. At least you had the courage to admit to it and release an apology. One I also hope you will reach out to coach Tony Sparano and do the same. He strikes me as the type of guy that would respect that.

Best of luck continuing in the future.

  • fins4ever1

No need to apologize at all. Being wrong is part of the risk / reward with reporting news. We all appreciate your efforts. I do wish however that if you were going to be wrong, it could have been on another topic. LOL LOL Nothing against TS, I just thought (and still do) Harbaugh was a perfect fit for our needs.

    GO FINS!

  • southbeach

I believe an apology is silly and totally uncalled for. Ross does not meet with Harbaugh’s agent later in the day for nothing, and Phins coaches are not packing for nothing.

I believe your report, at the time, was accurate. What more could readers expect from anyone?

Keep on doing what you’re doing. I see absolutely nothing that was wrong.

  • Exiliado

I dont live in Miami (well, not even in the US) and yours is the best source of info for someone like me since the blogblitz updates are so spaced away. Just found this blog this season and started following it to get news and insight from other fans. One mistake wont change that (altough i was kind of excited to see where JB could bring the fins…)
Right now i would like TS to quit to keep some dignity and give Ross something to think about and make him think for someone going to the future, as with TS, we have a 1 year future only…
Wife is a new made steelers fan, and it is getting hard to defend against her… and harder for me to raise a baby girl dolfan and not a steelerfan

    • mlm92124

Nice to know we have at least one international fan.

  • Jo Ann

Brian, you are one class act. You are just as decent and dignified as Tony Sparano has been as he endured what should be classified as worse than hell. I will read your site more often just because you thought of OUR feelings.

  • http://Www.phinnation.com Bill

Appreciate the apology Brian, but really it’s not your fault. I just posted an apology on my site as well. The thing is, what if Harbaugh DID agree to coach the Dolphins as was reported by our sources? What if, after he agreed, he had second thoughts? What if, after hearing Harbaugh was having second thoughts, Stephen Ross called off the deal and decided Tony would return? In this case, your previous post was actually correct at the time it was written. People change their minds and apparently Harbaugh did it to theDolphins and niners. You can only report what is accurate at the time; Keep up the good work, don’t sweat it!

  • mlm92124

I noticed the two comments from the person writing in all caps and using all the foul language have been removed. GOOD, the structure of his/her comments was inappropriate and wasn’t worth being posted. There’s no need for that ignorance, thinking (or lack of) that foul language must be used to make a point.

  • evan

Well, this is what happens when you use an unnamed source. Seriously amateur move.

  • idahomer

No need to apologize Tex.. Although your source proably owes you one. When I saw you broke that news, but no one else was reporting anything I was wondering if you jumped the gun. Tough job trying to scoop this stuff, especially with this team – where it seems the only ones who know what is really going on are the ones making all these stupid mistakes. I for one am happy at the outcome. Sporano is not the problem. He needs to make some changes in staff, and in his own philosophy, but he is the best coach this team has had since Shula and deserves another year at least to turn this around. We are not that far away. If we would have made the plays this year defensively and Henne would have not throw 10+ 4th qtr picks in close games this team would be in the playoffs this weekend.

  • imawriterrobj

    Yeah, Brian…you suck!

    NO.
Actually, you have just walked the walk, painful as it can be. been there myself, as I Moderate a 46,000+ coffee oriented forum/website.

If Mike Vick gets a 2nd chance, sure YOU must. After all, no creature died because of your accidental mis-step.
This place is a refreshing change from the many trolls at the Herald, and I actually wish the reporters there would be a bit more forthcoming. They “apparently” had no clue the team was already unraveling 3-4 games ago.
I’ll wager someone here probably was already posting that information.

Y’all do a fine job here, and I feel a LOT more in the loop regarding my team of the last 46 years.

    Rock on.
