They say when you cover a topic that the one thing you never should do is apologize. I don’t know who made that rule up nor do I really care at this point. What I do care about is this site, the Miami Dolphins, and my reputation. Today, all three took a hit. Two of which I could control. To say I was wrong is an understatement. To say my source was wrong would be allowing someone else to take my blame.
I reported it, not them.
The sports business is really tricky and unless your sleeping on a wall in a teams facility you rely on information that you can obtain through various contacts. I have two very solid ones but in this case, one happened to be wrong and the other never corroborated it. Regardless, I made the decision to run what I was told early and in doing so, put out information that turned out to be false.
It really doesn’t matter if Jim Harbaugh and the Miami Dolphins ever did agree in principal on a deal as I reported, I said they did and that’s all that matters. The fact that news was picked up on a more national level is of no consequence considering the outcome.
I write this only to apologize to all of you who re-posted it, talked about, got your hopes up or down, or anything in between. I suppose I will be a lot more cautious moving forward in what I post on site and how soon to post what I hear after I have heard it. This was a resounding learning experience that I wish I didn’t have to endure but that is part of this game.
I hope that my apology is enough. Thank you for reading this site and supporting myself and the other staff writers that work daily to bring you the most updated content on the Miami Dolphins.
