Rewinding History...Want vs. Need

Back in 2005, we were full of optimism.  We just hired Nick Saban, next college guru that will have a pro-founding effect on the NFL game.  We had the 2nd overall pick that was going to provide us that ‘home run hitter’ that are our team was lacking, a true playmaker.

Throughout the combine, and the interview process, Saban was stated to have a ‘man crush’ on Alex Smith.  The 49ers had the first overall pick, and have felt the same affection towards Smith that the Dolphins expressed.

Meanwhile, there was an ugly duckling invited to the combine, that no one wanted to dance with; Aaron Rodgers.  It was like being at a high school dance, and everyone wanted to dance with the cheerleaders and not the Band ladies.

Miami chose not to go with their instinct, of drafting a future Superbowl winner, rather going with the more alluring pick.  Saban decided that need for a starting Running Back superseded the want for a starting QB.  Truth be told, this wouldn’t be the last time the Packers picked up a player Miami had the chance to draft.
