So we have our first training session since our first game (a loss to the Bradford Bears by two points). Defensively we needed to get back to basics, even though we shut them out, we still needed to correct some stuff!
We run a 3-5-3 defense, this as mentioned last week allows us to put more play makers on the field. We have three formations, “base” (our initial 3 down line men, 3 interior backers, 2 hybrid safety/linebackers and 3 defensive backs). With the right players at the nose tackle and middle linebacker, we are pretty solid “up the middle” , but having quicker guys outside we also hold the outside contain well! “solid”, this is a 4 -3 look which allows us to send an extra rusher at the quarterback while still giving us the opportunity to protect against the pass. What we do is drop our left inside linebacker into a 3 point stance, wide of the end man on the line of scrimmage and run a zone pass coverage (cover 2). Finally we have the “Tuff”, this is a 5 man line where we drop the left inside linebacker & right inside linebacker into 3 point stance, with the interior of the defensive line “pinching” into the middle of the offensive line, we bring one of the outside linebackers into a more traditional 5- 2 defense and we use this as our short yardage defense. As you can see we can defend against most down and distance situations albeit using very basic fundamentals.
