What Should The Miami Dolphins Top FA Priority Be?

The Miami Dolphins are rumored to be heading towards a very active free agent period when and if the league new year arrives.  With Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams both free agents, Tyler Thigpen a likely free agent who is rumored to be on the Buffalo Bills radar, gaps on the offensive line, defensive linebacking corp, and a need for another complimentary WR, the Dolphins have holes to fill and money supposedly to spend.

Jeff Ireland is not Bill Parcells and he has no problem spending owner Stephen Ross‘ money.  With names such as Carolina RB De’Angelo Williams and Cincinnati runner Cedric Benson on tap to hit the market, as well as names across every other position, this year could be a spending spree that may see a large contingent of 4 and 5 year players hitting the streets.

So what should the Dolphins number one priority be heading into the free agent period when it opens?

Need for a starting Free Safety

Phins should make DeAngelo Williams the top priority. He seems to be the perfect compliment to Daniel Thomas. Why would we go after a QB in free agency? no QBs that could challenge for the starting job (other than Vince Young) will be in free agency. No matter what QB we bring in, Henne will have an obvious edge because he knows the playbook and has built chemistry with the offense. If any QB will be brought in, I’d prefer Palmer. And everyone knows that u need 2 good RBs to complete an offense. WR, FS, and O-Line are all ok for now… and the TE and LB needs are overstated and arent THAT important… RB is the only true DIER need.

I think they should look at a left guard like Dahl and OLB Many Lawson. Any of the FA RB’s worth getting will be high dollar. I like the idea of Thomas and Hilliard pounding the ball with Sheets in the mix. Sign Bulger for vet QB backup.

While other teams are busy with NFL FA, the Phins should round up the best of the undrafted rookies to try out. Like:

QB – Scott Tolzien, Wis; Pat Devlin, Del; or even Div II QB Zack Eskridge, Midwestern State, the kid is good! Heck, even look into where Colt Brennan is with his rehab.

RB – People talk about Derrick Locke but the guy to bring in is Chad Spann, Northern Ill. I introduced his youtube to the guys on the Sun Sentinel and they are crazy about him.

Another to look at is Brandon Saine, OSU.

TE – Weslye Saunders is a beast but missed last season at SC due to suspension. Also TE Charlie Gantt (blocking machine) of Michigan State.

OL – Must have’s are Ryan Bartholomew and Zack Hurd. Also tackle Kyle Hix from TX looks promising.

ILB – Mario Harvey, Marshall, tackling machine at 5’11″, 257 lbs and runs a 4.46 40.

QB isn’t the top need, the Phins already have Henne and I can imagine Thigpen will re-sign. The QB need is simply to fill roster spots and provide competition for Henne. Bulger is the best choice. I think the Dolphins are set with RB’s. Sign Brown and with Thomas and Hilliard in the mix, they’ll be fine. Charles Clay will be an excellent mis-match TE. Would be great to have a seam threat TE like Owen Daniels, but I just don’t see the Phins going in that direction. The biggest needs are LB’s to prevent tight ends from tearing up the defence. And a true ball-hawk Free Safety. I’m really intrigued by Jimmy Wilson and what he can introduce since the Dolphins will be using him at safety and not CB. But not sure if he’ll be an immediate impact other than on special teams. I haven’t done my research to see if there are any good safeties on the market right now, but that’s a huge hole right now. I mean, the corner backs need to start catching more interceptions, but look what Ed Reed and Troy Polamalu are able to do and think what the Phins D would be like with either of those guys.
