This is really quite simple for the Dolphins. Get Kyle Orton! However you have to do it, get him. According to multiple sources including the Orlando Sentinel, the talks between the Dolphins and Orton are heating up. Good, they should be.
Our lead writer, Brian Miller hosted a live chat yesterday about the fiasco that is free agency, and I asked straight out, “do you think a third rounder is too much for Orton?”, to which Brian responded, yes. Now I have the utmost respect for Brian, but my initial reaction to that response was, “are you NUTS?”
Here are the facts. Orton is 32-29 as a starter is his career, including his 3-10 record last season.. In his last two seasons, he has thrown for over 3,500 yards and 20 TD’s. (In 2010, he actually missed three games and still managed those numbers) He knows how to run an offense. He knows how to air it out.
Denver had the 7th best passing attack in the league last year, even with teams knowing exactly what they were going to do every game. You can’t blame the record on Orton. That’ll happen when you have the worst defense in the league. If Orton comes to Miami, he will have a better situation. He will have a running game. He should have a better offensive line. With the addition of Edmond Gates, he’ll have speed on the outside. And he’ll have a defense. The sixth best defense in the league, actually. And the Dolphins will gain a quarterback who can spread the field, make all the throws, and most of all, have some confidence in his arm.
Orton is better than the other quarterbacks who have been signed already. Matt Hasselbeck and Donovan McNabb? Too old. Vince Young? Too crazy. Carson Palmer? Too expensive and too stubborn. Did I miss anybody? Orton is only 28, he has no outstanding problems with coaches or players. And I haven’t even mentioned his connections to Brandon Marshall! Bringing him in would do nothing but help an offense that is starved for playmakers.
I’m sorry Brian, but if that isn’t worth a third round pick, I don’t know what is.
