REGGIE BUSH TRADE UPDATE: The Dolphins have officially stated that Jon Amaya was part of the trade that brought Reggie Bush to Miami. Amaya, a second year safety was no the only compensation as the Dolphins stated an undisclosed draft pick was also sent to New Orleans.
Today at 6:00 PM eastern, the NFL will officially kick-off free agency. Why is that important? Simple, teams, for the first time, can meet with free agents. Up until that time, teams can’t even speak directly with the free agent players. They can talk to their agents, discuss contracts, but the can’t interview them, can’t give them a physical, can’t look at them from across the parking lot. In other words, they have to take the agents word that the player is in good shape.
That’s a lot to ask of a team when they are plopping down million dollar contracts. It’s also why most of the agreements have been made with players who have solid work ethics. It’s also why the Miami Dolphins may have been playing it a little safer in looking at players who they had to trade for. Those guys have at least been scoped out by their own teams.
Tonight, free agency really get’s rolling. Teams will visit with players and contracts will start flying off the wall, but take note, even a player signed today, tonight, tomorrow, or Sunday, can NOT participate in any practices. They can sit at a desk or in a team meeting or watch from the sidelines, but they can not practice with their teams until August 4th, next Thursday. So just because FA opens today, doesn’t mean that some teams won’t take their time.
The Miami Dolphins will hold their first practice today starting at 11:00 am. I know some of you at work can’t follow some of the local media that attends, so I will try and keep you updated throughout that practice with anything interesting. We will also hold another Q & A today around 2:00 PM eastern time and I will get you caught up on some of the rumors leading into the weekends free agent period.
