Miami Dolphins' Jake Long Opens On PUP

The Miami Dolphins don’t talk much about what they are doing, planning on doing, or about why they are doing it.  If they don’t have to talk they won’t.  So it comes as little surprise that news today tells us the reason that LT Jake Long has not been participating in football drills is because, he is on the PUP list.  According to the Palm Beach Post.

Under league rules, a player can only be put on the PUP list prior to the start of training camp without major issues.  If Long remains on the PUP list at the start of the season, he will miss the first six games of the season.  By placing him on it now, Long can use the extra time to get healthier while still getting into condition.  He can do all the conditioning drills but not the actual football drills.

So in reality, this is no big deal as it’s likely safer having Long on the sideline for the pre-season so as not to aggravate the shoulder he had surgery on after the season.

In unrelated news, the New York Jets have agreed to terms with FA WR Plaxico Burress on a one year deal that will pay him  $3,017,000.  The contract is 100 percent guaranteed.

For players like Jake who have their position solidified, there is really no reason to risk injury. This also allows the rooks more exposure in practice making it a win – win. I have read that many teams “take it light” on their valued vets until just prior to the regular season. I like the trend.
