The NFL and the Oakland Raiders lost a pioneer this morning when it was confirmed that at the age of 82, Raiders owner Al Davis has passed away. Over the last several years Davis had battled health issues but never once stopped being the owner of the Raiders. Some would say much to the chagrin of his team and their fans. Davis was seen in his later years as a shell of the man he used to be and often came across eccentric to say the least. Yet the man he once was, was a pioneer who was pivotal in the formation of today’s NFL. An instrumental part of the merger between the NFL and AFL.
Davis’ passing is really not a surprise, over the past year/s he had been seen barely walking and his presence at away games had become impossible for him to endure but what he has done over the course of his life will resonate in the persona of the team that he built. At first as the teams head coach and later as it’s owner. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family today. Rest in peace Mr. Davis!
