No matter which Head Coach the Dolphins hire it will not be as important as the decision they have to make in getting a quarterback. Having an “elite” coach will never be as important as the Quarterback position. With the 6 wins the Dolphins ended the season with, they have undoubtedly taken themselves out of the Andrew Luck race and possibly out of the Robert Griffin (or whichever Quarterback is deemed as second best) in this year’s upcoming draft.
All of the current coaches that we hold in such high regard around the league are attached to their elite Quarterbacks. Offenses and ultimately wins are all based on passing offenses nowadays. Teams have won nine out of the past ten Super Bowls with Quarterbacks that we would consider elite. That is why the next Head Coach-Quarterback combo needs to be exactly that: a combination.
The Indianapolis Colts, with the first overall selection in this year’s upcoming draft, will very likely make the pick available, albeit for a very high price. I think that the management of the Dolphins should think long and hard about what it will take and cost in order to move up to that spot. Andrew Luck seems like a sure fire Quarterback that has the most potential of anybody out there, probably for the foreseeable future as well, to become that perennial Super Bowl contender.
Just take a look at the direction of the Dolphins and the Falcons. We took Jake Long first overall the same year Matt Ryan was taken third overall by the Falcons. Since then, the Falcons have been in contention every year and the Dolphins made the playoffs once thanks to Chad Pennington and the Wildcat surprising and catching the league off guard enough for eleven wins and winning the tie-breaker against the Patriots. Jake Long has become the best Left Tackle in the NFL but Matt Ryan equals wins.
The Dolphins as an organization keep trying to win with mediocre (at best) Quarterbacks. The league emphasizes elite Quarterback play way too much for us to keep thinking we can win with a strong running game and above average defense.
