I swear there are other positions in the NFL but it seems this year above and beyond any others, the QB position is garnering…or should I say, bogarting, the conversations. I’m not talking about just the Miami Dolphins either. This obsession with the position this year is out of control and something that fans of the NFL haven’t seen in years.
Last year, the NFL held a flurry of shop talk centering around Kevin Kolb then of the Eagles, Washington’s Donovan McNabb, and Seattle’s Matt Hasselbeck. Perhaps the damper on their time in the NFL rumor mill was dampened by the lockout. Immediately following the end to the summer long block, players signed quickly and the only real edge of your seat anticipation was the volley between the Miami Dolphins Jeff Ireland and Denver’s John Elway over Kyle Orton.
In April, teams ate up draft prospects earlier than expected. Carolina took Cam Newton number 1 overall which was expected but Jake Locker went 8th, Blaine Gabbert 10th, and Christian Ponder went to the Vikings at number 12. Two QB’s went early in round 2 and Ryan Mallett an expected first round pick dropped to the third round. This year’s draft class may not have as much meat at the top but what is happening in the lead up to free agency will have major impacts in the draft.
Here is a run down on what is going on out there today as we head into the final two and a half week stretch to free agency.
