Miami Dolphins’ Jeff Ireland Officially on the Hot Seat

According to a report by Gregg Rosenthal on nfl.com, Jeff Ireland, the current general manager of the Miami Dolphins, is officially on the hot-seat after yesterday’s embarrassing loss to the Houston Texans (30-10).

Ireland clearly has made no progress in the last two seasons as far as the talent on the current roster is concerned. Finding talent and keeping talent seems to be Ireland’s biggest issue.

Although Ireland has hit on a few draft selections and a few free agent signings, the Miami Dolphins’ general manager clearly is not getting the job done. Ireland has wasted high draft selections on players such as QB Pat White (2nd round – most notably) and CB Vontae Davis (1st round – recently traded to Indianapolis).

It was revealed during HBO’s hit series, Hard Knocks, that Ireland has been around football his whole life and has been around NFL talent for twenty some years. If this is true, shouldn’t Ireland be able to find the talent to build an NFL roster?

If Miami is to only achieve a 4-12 or 5-11 season – which seems highly likely after watching yesterday’s game, Miami Dolphins Owner Stephen Ross should have no reason to keep Jeff Ireland aboard.

Maybe a change up front is the spark this team needs….

Just look at Brandon Marshall’s stats yesterday!!! What planet is Ireland on? Give him ten bucks and a bus ticket to Hoboken, NJ and bid him farewell.

    • TylerMcMullen

Agreed. Although Marshall had off the field problems – You never trade away your number one receiver without a plan to replace him. It was clear that Miami had no threat at wide receiver. Thanks for the read and the comment man!

    • Haydn

That’s true. Trading your best playmaker for no replacment at WR. Sorry but Jeff Ireland had to begun a longgggggg time ago. He is destroying is own mass!!!

  • DolphinLover

On second thought—take him off the Christmas card list!!!!!

    • TylerMcMullen

      Lol – Agreed!

  • Darkoak

Seems a change in ownership is what’s really needed, but we can continue the purge with Ireland.

    • TylerMcMullen

A change in ownership could work wonders – but i would like to see what would happen with a different GM first. Remember – Ross and Ireland came into this together. A new GM may work wonders for this team – or a change in ownership may work even better. Thanks for the read and the comment man!

    • DolphinLover

Anyone but Matt Millen!!!!!! Perhaps put Philbin in charge of the GM position. He has strong O and D coaches and could fit the bill better in my NOT SO IMPRESSIVE OPINION!!

      • TylerMcMullen

Oh gosh – PLEASE NOT MATT MILLEN! I think Philbin has the coaching duties locked up. At this point – this is all just a rumor and there really aren’t any leads on possible successors. Thanks for the read and the comment man!

        Amen ireland”s twin brother

  • Mr Jim

I’m not on (nor have I been) on the fire Ireland bandwagon,,, but season after season he seems to systematically make our team weaker. It’s OK to crush a building if you’re going to build a mansion – but you can’t do it year after year… Just my take – Go Dolphins, oh – and IMO, he appeared to be a D-B on Hard Knocks… Phins will never be the 85 Bears

    • TylerMcMullen

I don’t think their goal is to be the ’85 bears my man. But you have a valid statement. We need to work on building this team from the bottom up. Ireland has had his bright spots, but his busts and D-B behavior has put off numerous free agents and coaches. Thanks for the read and the comment!!

I know I am pretty much alone in this statement but I don’t
think that Ireland has been given a fair chance. Everyone points to the Pat White pick but yet
Ireland was the one AGAINT this pick. It
was PARCELLS who overturned Ireland’s opinion and chose White. You can’t crucify someone for something they didn’t
do! If you’re going to judge him, judge
him on HIS body of work. He is trying to
build this team from the bottom up. This
is how it is done. Bellicheat took over
a terrible Patriots team and built them up to what they are today. Every GM has misses in the draft.

He got rid of Marshall and Davis. Two players with off the field and ethical
issues and ones that didn’t fit with the direction of the team. Everyone wants to send him to his grave over
not having a replacement. Who says he’s
done??? What was he suppose to replace
B-Marsh with? Plax or Owens? Maybe he has a plan for another trade or to
      draft a receiver.

As long as this team continues to prematurely pull the
trigger on coaches/GMs and players they will never succeed!

      • Karen Smeltzer

Finally somebody with a good head on their shoulders. You brought up some very good points. These peolple are just a bunch of winers, that don’t have a clue about this team.

        • John

          Neither do you two morons.

          • TylerMcMullen

            LOL

          • Karen Smeltzer

Sticks and stones!! What’s with the name calling, that’s my opinion. And nobody is going to change it!!!

        • TylerMcMullen

Well, you’re entitled to your opinion Miss. Thanks for the read and the comment.

      • TylerMcMullen

I agree with some of your points. Some are very valid, but I disagree with Marshall. We traded Marshall BEFORE the draft and almost as soon as Free Agency began. Ireland had the ability to have a plan in place to replace the troubled Marshall and he failed to do so. Also – If you are the GM you have full power over who you draft – therefore although Parcells may have had his say in the White pick….Ireland was the one who pulled the trigger. Thanks for the read and the comment man!

  • beavis1109

Obviously Ireland didn’t get the memo. He’s stocking up on draft picks like he’s got 5 more years.

    • TylerMcMullen

LOL I agree man. Hopefully this will spark his mind to actually make a move for some talent at wide receiver. Who knows. Thanks for the read and the comment!!

  • John

Praise be to god! Four to five more straight loses should just about do it too. Get FIREland outta here! And hopefully Bernie Lomax twin brother sells the team soon.

    • TylerMcMullen

Unfortunately, regardless of how the next few weeks unfold – Ireland should remain our GM for the remainder of the season. I could be wrong, but it seems most likely. Thanks for the read and the comment!

  • faversham

Philip Merling, Vontae Davis, Pat White, Daniel Thomas, Patrick Turner, John Jerry, Michael Egnew, Shawn Murphy, Koa Misi — Parcells/Ireland make Wannstedt/Spielman at least Arena League competent in comparison to this inept duo — great decision retaining Ireland, Mr. Ross, you’re the new Huizenga. I think we need more low rent “celebrity” part-owners. The worst franchise in the NFL. Wonder what Philbin’s not saying?

    • TylerMcMullen

Lol – I have to say that I agree with everything you just said my man. Thanks for the read and the comment!

  • Connor

I like how the context of “could be” and the old “I heard it from a friend of a friend” was transformed into “Is officially in the hot seat.”

He’s been around for this long, what makes you think things are going to change now? Should have been done 2 years ago.

    • TylerMcMullen

He should have been gone last year along with sparano in my opinion…Oh well. As of right now this is all just a rumor. But we shall see how it unfolds. Thanks for the read and the comment!

  • http://www.facebook.com/james.havlin.7 James Havlin

jeff Ireland loved the dolphins, he would step down …..

    • TylerMcMullen

      LOL maybe..

  • http://www.facebook.com/james.havlin.7 James Havlin

It’s nott tannerhill’s mechanics thats hurting him, he telaplays his release look at the preaseason and all the tipped passes………..

    • TylerMcMullen

It actually is his mechanics. He needs to change his release point to prevent tipped or low passes. Thanks for the read and the comment man!

  • http://www.facebook.com/james.havlin.7 James Havlin

And give chad johnson another chance , just put a clause in his contract to shut up and just play ball..!

    • TylerMcMullen

I don’t think Chad has a spot on this team. Honestly, I think he’s done. Who knows. Thanks for the read and the comments.

  • http://www.facebook.com/james.havlin.7 James Havlin

And reg is a scat back, not a pounder

    • TylerMcMullen

Reggie is a scat back – who has a unique ability to put his head down. No way shape or form is he a pounder….But he can be when he needs to be or wants to be. Thanks for the read and the comments.

  • Tony Sparano

Anybody miss me yet? We’re probably going to put 40 points on you guys in a couple of weeks.

    • TylerMcMullen

      Sure thing “Coach Sparano”….

  • Matt

Seriously, I don’t see what seems to be the problem. I was one of the fans who joined the protest outside the training facility and we even flew a banner over the stadium in a demand to fire Ireland. How is it he’s still here? He’s destroying the team and Ross is to blind to see it. How do you trade away your best wide receiver and don’t have a replacement for him? I’ve been fed up with this team for years now and it doesn’t look like it will be heading in the right direction anytime soon. Sign Owens and Johnson for cheap and let our new QB have some targets.

    • TylerMcMullen

I agree with everything you have said – except for signing Owens and Johnson. We don’t need their “acts” on this team. If Ireland really wants to save his job, he will make a trade for a big time wide receiver – Dwayne Bowe anyone? Thanks for the read and the comment man!

  • HopelessDick10

Its almost like Ireland wants his team to fail. Trading away the only pro-bowl players, not going after free agents that are available, making stupid draft decisions (Pat White). It’s laughable how bad of a GM he is, how is he still employed? This ONLY happens to us.

    • TylerMcMullen

I wouldn’t say he “wants” the team to fail. It may not look like it but he is trying. He just simply isn’t getting the job done in most aspects. Thanks for the read and the comment!

  • jcartwright67

Some interesting comments here. I truly believe Ross will be a good owner. He’s a very shrewd businessman that Forbes recognizes in the top 300 world wide. He’s self made too..didn’t have Daddy’s money to start with. Thus, folks, he’s going to make some good business decisions with Ireland down the road…its inevitable. You don’t become a Billionaire making poor, emotional decisions. But I think Ross likes Ireland and is willing to let him run a few years with this new coaching group and Parcells off his back. If Ireland hit with Tannehill, you’ll all be calling Ireland a genius. Me, personally, I think Ireland has the “Gump” approach to the draft and personnel decisions….My momma always said, “Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.” and with that and assumig Tannehill is a “Marinoesque” QB, another “Gumpism” comes to mind about Ireland,..God damn it, Gump! You’re a god damn genius! This is the most outstanding answer I have ever heard. You must have a goddamn I.Q. of 160. You are goddamn gifted, Private Gump. Listen up, people… LOL Miami fans…looking forward to the Raiders this weekend! (Forest Gump, 1994)
