The Miami Dolphins simply failed to show up defensively today. Andrew Luck easily walked away with the best rookie performance of the year today throwing for a rookie record 433 yards against a Dolphins defense that looked lost, confused, and like a team buying into their own hype.
Coming in to this weekend, the Dolphins were the best team in the NFL on 3rd down defense. Today, they gave up six third down conversions of 10 yards or more and it became a joke every time the Colts faced third and long. While the Dolphins struggled on defense, the offense seemed poised enough to win the game in the end.
Facing a long field, the Dolphins moved the ball well but fell apart after the two minute warning.
The Dolphins offense played well enough to win but failed to continue the momentum that built a 17 to 13 lead at half-time. The Dolphins scored on their first three drives before punting late in the second and taking a knee to end the half. They were unable to find any momentum in the second half and could only add a field goal.
The team as a whole looked sluggish and lacked any desire, especially on defense. It was a major let down that left fans wondering if the team simply bought into their own good press. This loss was clearly on the coaches who failed to put a prepared team on the field.
Next week, the Dolphins will be back home for the Tennessee Titans and then a short four days later will face the Buffalo Bills on Thursday night. It’s going to get a lot tougher for a team that had the ball rolling on their side. How they step away from this loss will be the final defining moment of this season. This one was more than simply letting a game get away.
