Bart Scott was a top free agent pick-up a few years ago.  He was the best interior linebacker on the market after stellar seasons with the Baltimore Ravens.  He was also part of the New York Jets spending spree by newly hired loudmouth Rex Ryan.  Today, Scott along with four others are gone as of today.

Scott joins LB Calvin Pace, TE Josh Baker, Safety Eric Smith, and Tackle Jason Smith.  Scott was a leader on the NY Jets defense but the Jets are in salary cap hell.  The NFL’s cap is reportedly going to jump a mere 1.4 million dollars over last year.

The Jets have been free spending since Ryan arrived.  Putting high-dollar amounts on good to very good players.  Despite the talent, the Jets could not make the big game.  In Rex Ryan’s first two seasons, the Jets made the AFC Championship game but failed to get the team the needed victory.

Ryan is reportedly on his final season without a major turnaround.  GM Mike Tannebaum was fired at seasons end.  Of the five former Jets, only TE Josh Baker is subject to the waiver rules.  The other four are unrestricted free agents and can sign with another team at any time.

The Jets will still need to make roster cuts in order to get beneath the March 12th start of the league new year and have money left to fill vacancies.  Two weeks ago, the Buffalo Bills began purging their roster as well.
