The Miami Dolphins entered the day with high hopes and ended it with nothing. Entertaining DE Michael Bennett and TE Dustin Keller, the Dolphins opted to let both men leave but in different manners.
Dustin Keller simply walked out the door and headed home, the Dolphins apparently not willing to give him a multi-year deal. It was rumored shortly after that his brother said he was seeking more of a Jared Cook type contract. The two sides agreed to keep the channels open.
In the case of Michael Bennett, he left Miami with a one year deal worth 5 million dollars with the Seattle Seahawks. It’s not known whether or not the Dolphins offered Bennett a deal or if negotiations came close enough to talk seriously. Regardless, Bennett is in Seattle and the Dolphins are moving on.
One common train of thought is that the Dolphins are waiting for Jake Long to make his decision, apparently the Dolphins are still hoping to bring him back. If that is the case, then the team will likely lose out on RT Eric Winston who has spoke with the Dolphins as well. Winston would be more than capable of handling the right side of the line with Jonathan Martin on the left.
The team however has still not looked at cornerbacks despite the crowded market and low price tag. Earlier they watched Sean Smith sing with Kansas City. While many surmise that the Dolphins are in good shape with their draft picks come April, they are still thin and need to find players. It appears that at this time Jeff Ireland may be shopping for bargains.
