Dolphins Pass On Dustin Keller?

According to a report from Rich Cimini, the NY Jets TE Dustin Keller, has left the Dolphins facility without a contract.  Cimini says the two sides will keep in touch which normally means, “yeah, I’ll let you know when I sign with another team”.

Keller has been in Miami for two days and there is some grumbling that Miami is waiting on Jake Long signing with St. Louis and the fate of Jermichael Finley in Green Bay.  They are entertaining DE Michael Bennett and WR Brandon Gibson at the moment.

The Dolphins currently have two glaring needs.  Cornerback where Dimitri Patterson and Richard Marshall stand as the starters and TE where the team has Michael Egnew and Kyle Miller to go along with HB/TE Charles Clay on their roster.  Keller would have provided the Dolphins a big seam threat TE and another target for Ryan Tannehill.

Outside of Keller, the Dolphins could still entertain Fred Davis of Washington and Brandon Meyer of Oakland.  Neither player stands as a top TE like Jared Cook who the Phins were unable to land and Dustin Keller.

Dustin Keller is one of those guys who will light it up one game and then disappear for a few then light it up again. Too inconsistent for my taste and I would not over pay. If I had my druthers Brandon Myers has more appeal to me. Great hands, big ass dude, who was coming into his own with C. Palmer throwing to him.

    Hmmm…

Dustin Keller had 28 catches in 2012. His CAREER best is 65.

Brandon Myers had 79 catches in 2012, while Jermichael Finley had 61.

I’m just not sure why we’re even bothering with Keller except to jerk NY’s chain. Both Myers and Finley (if he becomes available) are better receivers. None of the three are great blockers.

I know it’s scary we don’t have a legitimate TE right now, but letting Keller walk isn’t necessarily a bad thing.
