While a lot, and I mean A LOT of fans are down on Brandon Gibson, I see this is a good move for the Miami Dolphins. Gibson is young at the age of 25 and runs a 40 in around 4.6. In the four years he has been a Ram, Gibson has been targeted over 300 times with 174 receptions.
He has 9 touchdowns on his career and over 2,000 yards on those 174 catches with a 14 yard average.
The obvious question is who will the Dolphins trim from their roster? Over the past few days, GM Jeff Ireland has signed and then axed a player at his position. In the case of Gibson, Davone Bess could be released.
Bess is entering his final year of his contract and would save the Dolphins around 2 million in cap space with a marginal dead money hit. It’s possible that Jeff Ireland will and honestly he should try and trade Bess if removal of Bess from the team is in the cards.
While Ireland took day 2 and 3 off from any signings, he has added two offensive weapons for Ryan Tannehill today. TE Dustin Keller and now Gibson.
And he still has a load of cap space left is he chooses to use it. It is reported that he is trying very hard to get Jake Long back with the team.
UPDATE: The Gibson deal is reportedly for 3 years. No word on amount yet.
