Tonight when the Miami Dolphins get into a 3rd and short or hopefully a goal line situation, Daniel Thomas just may be the Dolphins first choice to tote the rock. This according to Andrew Abramson of the Palm Beach Post. According to the Abramson, Thomas is going to be the Dolphins short yardage and goal line back. There is just one small problem with that. He isn’t very good at it.
Abramson cites the fact that Thomas has improved but let’s be real here for a second. Improving over what Thomas has been is a very large patch of real estate. It’s like saying Michael Egnew improved over his 2012 season because this year he caught a pass. There is still a long distance between there and being sufficient. I like Daniel Thomas but he has to show a lot more than what he has and he needs to be far more consistent.
Thomas can take the ball and hit a hole and before you know it he is 10 yards downfield. Two plays later he is dancing behind the line of scrimmage or misses the hole entirely. To say nothing of him putting the ball on the ground. At times it seems as though Thomas isn’t 100% into the game. There was never a question that Reggie Bush was, which I realize that line will spark a “why the hell did we let him go…” comments but it is true. In fact it was true with Ronnie Brown as well. Thomas still does not possess that killer instinct that top RB’s have.
His one saving grace is he is a capable pass blocker and the Dolphins are thin in that department. It may be the one reason the Dolphins are forcing themselves to push Thomas into the short yardage back. If he can’t cut however, there are going to be more fans questioning this decision.
