.

What is the worst part of our overall game right now? The majority of NFL critics, fans and opposing teams know that is protecting our Quarterback.  We are on pace for 72 sacks this year…in a word that is “disgusting.” Somewhere David Carr has a smile on his face.

Jeff Ireland has always been keen on looking for acorns, but one fell to the ground and we did nothing about it.  It has been reported the Baltimore Ravens have traded for a legit top prospect Eugene Monroe.  Yes, the same player that was drafted 10th overall in the 2008 draft and has graded out as the 8th best Left Tackle in the game this year.

I am not saying we missed out on improving our team, but I am a little surprised, no shocked that we didn’t make a play for this blue chip prospect. Monroe is coming off his rookie contracts so his salary cap hit would not be a factor.  Furthermore, the Ravens, according the report on pro football talk, stated he was dealt for draft picks in the 3rd day – meaning maybe a 4th and 6th rounder.  I know our mentality is to build within the draft, but we haven’t started 3-0 since 2003 and we have a team that is right there if we can continue to protect our franchise QB.

Jonathon Martin has played well at left tackle, but not great and Tyson Calbo is not holding up against the point of attack thereby causing more sacks this year than he registered in 2012.  I am not sure where Philbin is going to get this extra protection, perhaps by requesting Clay to help out, but that would limit his offensive ability which is now starting to shine.

Dion Sims our 4th round tight end had a great catch against ATL two weeks ago, but his protection is not holding up. Watch the game against ATL again and you can see that he was responsible for a sack and a few QB pressures.

I am not sure if the answer to our OL struggles can be found from internal growth. It might, but as of right now we don’t have the time to allow these young prospects to develop.  We should have made this trade Ireland.

Ireland, it’s time to put your GM hat on now and find us a player that can help us win, especially with Terrell Suggs coming to town!
