Michael Thomas has had himself quite a week and it’s getting even better. Today, he was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week!
Thomas was signed off the 49ers practice squad almost a week ago today. Due to injuries during the game on Sunday, Thomas was forced into action. He had no idea what his assignments were and had to rely on other players on the field to tell him what to do. Thomas broke up a game-winning catch intended for Danny Amendola and picked off Tom Brady in the endzone to seal the victory for the Dolphins.
Watching the tape again, Thomas looked very good for his limited experience in this system. It will be interesting to see how much he plays in this defense moving forward.
The Dolphins control their own destiny and will make the playoffs with wins against Buffalo this week and the New York Jets in week 17. It’s possible that Miami could still win the AFC East Division should they win out and the Patriots lost to Baltimore on Sunday and the Bills in week 17. Stranger things have happened in the NFL. As they say, “any given Sunday”. How much of a role Michael Thomas will play remains to be seen. He could be one of the only players in the NFL to go from practice squad player, to Defensive Player of the Week, back to the bench or even inactive.
The Bills and Miami kick-off in Buffalo at 1:00 eastern. Temperatures are expected to be in the single digits.
