The Miami Dolphins search for a new GM landed them Dennis Hickey. Fans had hoped for a little more spark to the enthusiasm meter hoping that Philadelphia Eagles Vice President of Player Personnel Tom Gamble would have been that man. He declined even an interview.
Today the Dolphins introduced their new GM without all the fanfare. Stephen Ross facing yet another backlash informed the media contingent that Dennis Hickey has control over the 53 man roster and that Dawn Aponte will report to Hickey. The Dolphins may or may not have gotten this search right. Tom Gamble however got his decision right.
Today Gamble lost his father after a long illness. Harry Gamble was and still is a figurehead in the Philadelphia Eagles organization having served at one time as the teams President. Last year Tom opted to leave San Francisco to join the Eagles specifically to be closer to his ailing father. It was thought to be one of the top reasons he declined an interview with the Dolphins.
The Dolphins have Dennis Hickey for two years and while no one is looking two years ahead to see who may be available the flirtation with Tom Gamble may roll back around if the Dolphins fail to improve on the field and with the teams player development.
For Tom he can at least know that his decisions kept him near his father until the last moments of his life. It’s what he wanted and it shows that ultimately family is always the wiser decision. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Gamble family.
