Dolphins Already Players In Free Agency

The Miami Dolphins haven’t signed anyone yet.  They haven’t made any offers that we are aware of.  They haven’t hosted any players because they can’t.  What they can do is contact agents of soon to be FA’s.

Last year the Dolphins were the big spenders in free agency landing Brent Grimes and Mike Wallace along with a slew of other free agents.  This time around the team may not add a ‘bunch’ of players but they may land some pretty high-profile ones.   According to the Miami Heralds Adam Beasley the Dolphins have reached out to not just one or two FA’s but to four.

The Dolphins are interested in Branden Albert and Eugene Monroe but they have also reached out to Oakland’s Jared Valdheer and St. Louis’ Rodger Saffold.  According to Beasley the Dolphins new GM, Dennis Hickey, wants to land one of the top left tackles and the sign Saffold to be one of the guards.  It would immediately bolster the left side of the Miami line if they pulled it off.

As many expected the Dolphins are going strong for offensive lineman.   They have no choice but they will need to be careful as well.  The team needs, and needs is an understatement, four new offensive lineman but they can’t keep blinders on.  They are going to have needs at DT as well.  Randy Starks and Paul Soliai are likely talking with their agents about other teams today as well.

The good news is that Miami is recognizing their biggest need and attacking it early.  How much gets done afterwards is really anyone’s guess.

My order of preference would be Eugene Monroe or Jared Valdheer at LT with a slight edge maybe to Valdheer.  Then add Saffold or KC guard Jon Asamoah.  I would then look at some of the other free agents along the line but turn my focus to the defense.

Keep dreaming Veldheer is not going anywhere.

Yeah, I’ve written off Veldheer. Oakland has Fort Knox in cap space…and if they DON’T offer JV a big contract, what would that say? Remember when Miami didn’t make a top offer for Flynn? Well, there was a reason. Other than fear of a potential PED issue, I see no real downside to Veldheer.

But Oakland knows him better than anyone.

“My order of preference would be Eugene Monroe or Jared Valdheer at LT with a slight edge maybe to Valdheer. Then add Saffold or KC guard Jon Asamoah” I can’t argue against that… I had a slight preference for A. Collins but haven’t heard anything and most people who like me, are following this pre-process in detail, haven’t heard as much as a rumor either. Should the Phins shock the football world and sign Collins, I will be waving a huge Hickey banner for being sleek and astute. Should he sign Albert, I would hope that the guaranteed portion is minimal and somewhat contingent to health issues, especially because those issues are back issues, but be it as it may, the fact we are targeting what needs to be targeted is such a welcome change from former regimes… signed grimes, out aggressively on the first day of “legal-tampering”, I’m liking this Hickey.

As long as Miami signs a veteran lineman or two, and drafts two lineman high the o line should be ok.

Agreed. Two vets to start, two rookies to start (two is max on the line, IMHO), and 1-2 versatile guys on day three of the draft or late in free agency.

Yes, we have other needs. But NONE of them come close to the line. 2014 is over before it begins if that is not priority #1, #2, #3 and #4…which is why yesterday was encouraging.

I hope they don’t sign Veldheer. Oakland leads the league in cap space at $60mil yet they let walk out the door without getting franchised or even with a contract offer. I think that says it all right there, he fought injuries in 2013 and didn’t play well when he was back from injury. Id like to see Albert signed as LT and Saffold at LG, hopefully get the 2 of them signed for $13-15mil/yr. Monroe is good and younger then Albert but seeking $10-12mil per year and will likely get it. Getting Albert for 4-5 years @ $30-40mil would be ideal and then draft a tackle and start him on the right side to groom him into LT as Albert gets old. Sounds easy. LOL
