‘Niners Make Two Shocking Moves In FA

We aren’t even 24 hours in to Free Agency yet and already it has been a crazier and wackier period than I can remember in the NFL.  Safeties dominated day one, as the much coveted Jarius Byrd landed in New Orleans and the Broncos brought in T.J. Ward from Cleveland for a great price.  While teams like the Miami Dolphins were going after players to fill needs, the San Francisco 49ers made two moves that left me puzzled.

First, the ‘Niners forfeited a sixth round draft pick for Jacksonville backup QB Blaine Gabbert.  I have so many problems with this.  If the 49ers needed a QB so badly (which they didn’t, they have two capable QB’s in Colin Kaepernick and Colt McCoy), why would they go after a Jacksonville Jaguar?  Gabbert has been absolutely awful since his time in the league.  He hasn’t managed to hit the side of a barn, let alone a receiver.

I would’ve understood signing Gabbert for almost no money, but giving up a 6th rounder?  Wow, San Francisco.  Next, the 49ers took the cancer that has been Jonathan Martin from the Miami Dolphins for a conditional 7th round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft.   In other words, the Dolphins basically gave Martin away.  If he makes the roster in San Fran, Miami will get their ultra-low pick.  If not, the Dolphins still very much win as the most problematic player in Miami’s history is off the team and out of the locker room.  It has been reported that Martin will play as a “swing” tackle behind very good starters Joe Staley and Anthony Davis.  My guess is that Martin will not see the field in San Fran, and that this move may have been a courtesy pickup from Martin’s former coach at Stanford Jim Harbaugh.

These kinds of story lines are what make FA one of my favorite times of the sporting year.  Day 2 is right around the corner, enjoy!

Martin, the “most problematic” player in Miami history? Really? Not the guy who sexually assaulted a volunteer – the guy the HC wanted gone and the GM said no? Not Cecil Collins, who committed a burglary during the season and is still waiting to get out of prison?

The 49ers are the 2nd or 3rd best team in the league….maybe you need to wait for them to lose before you start ragging’ on them?

So a 6th round pick is very valuable (more so than a serviceable veteran backup qb apparently) but a 7th round pick is just a “give away” …. your logic is questionable. Keep in mind how many picks the Niners possess this year and next…. more than they need to fill gaps in an already solid roster.

1st off – the 6th round pick is nothing…McCoy is a FA so there is a need for a back up QB…Coach clearly thought he may be able to work with gabbert…if not, he gets cut like the 6th round pick likely would…Martin was a heck of a steal…he’s a 2nd round talent that the 49ers got for basically free (7th rd pick). He will likely be an important part of the line and provides good depth.

    Huh ?
You mean Richie Incognito was the ‘victim’ in Miami ?
That poor man, harrassed by the ‘cancer’, Jonathon Martin ?????
    WOW !!
    poor, poor Richie !!

A 6th rounder for a back-up quarterback is not a high price. Can Gabbert play? Well, Jim Harbaugh thinks yes and Eric thinks no. Who would you lay your bet with?

Despite what happened in Miami, if Martin can play at the NFL level, then getting him for a 7th round pick is a steal. Balke and Harbaugh are in the football business. They aren’t going to give a roster spot away.
