We aren’t even 24 hours in to Free Agency yet and already it has been a crazier and wackier period than I can remember in the NFL. Safeties dominated day one, as the much coveted Jarius Byrd landed in New Orleans and the Broncos brought in T.J. Ward from Cleveland for a great price. While teams like the Miami Dolphins were going after players to fill needs, the San Francisco 49ers made two moves that left me puzzled.
First, the ‘Niners forfeited a sixth round draft pick for Jacksonville backup QB Blaine Gabbert. I have so many problems with this. If the 49ers needed a QB so badly (which they didn’t, they have two capable QB’s in Colin Kaepernick and Colt McCoy), why would they go after a Jacksonville Jaguar? Gabbert has been absolutely awful since his time in the league. He hasn’t managed to hit the side of a barn, let alone a receiver.
I would’ve understood signing Gabbert for almost no money, but giving up a 6th rounder? Wow, San Francisco. Next, the 49ers took the cancer that has been Jonathan Martin from the Miami Dolphins for a conditional 7th round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. In other words, the Dolphins basically gave Martin away. If he makes the roster in San Fran, Miami will get their ultra-low pick. If not, the Dolphins still very much win as the most problematic player in Miami’s history is off the team and out of the locker room. It has been reported that Martin will play as a “swing” tackle behind very good starters Joe Staley and Anthony Davis. My guess is that Martin will not see the field in San Fran, and that this move may have been a courtesy pickup from Martin’s former coach at Stanford Jim Harbaugh.
These kinds of story lines are what make FA one of my favorite times of the sporting year. Day 2 is right around the corner, enjoy!
