Dolphins Sign Knowshon Moreno

The Miami Dolphins added a running back today when they signe veteran tailback Knowshon Moreno to a one year deal. The Dolphins had been looking at backs to help Lamar Miller and the anemic running game.

The signing will bring into question the future of Marcus Thigpen and/or Daniel Thomas. The team may also look to add a RB in this May’s draft although that no longer seems like a foregone conclusion. The Dolphins still have Mike Gillislee on the roster as well.

The NFL has become a passing league and the value of RB’s have dipped considerably over the last few years. The Dolphins had been rumored to be looking at Maurice Jones-Drew but Moreno is coming off a far better season.

Details of the contract are not yet known.

Excellent. Here’s my post from a couple days ago:

I wonder what Miami’s plans for Gillislee are? Either way, Thomas should probably be released. You’re then left with Miller, Gillislee and Thigpen. Thigpen will probably only be asked to return kicks and punts. So then you have Miller and Gillislee. Do you draft a RB early? Given the team’s other needs, probably not. Miami needs a HB that can pick up the blitz. It would behoove them to pick up a veteran guy capable of doing so, provide some leadership, and make the younger guys work hard to unseat him for playing time.

By signing Moreno, they bring in a solid veteran who can run, block, catch, provide leadership, push the younger guys, and allow Miami to focus elsewhere in the draft.

I keep reading people whine that Miami don’t ever get any compensatory picks. Thats because they always cut guys with a year left on their contract. Thomas has a hit of 1 mill and an actual cost to Ross of 800k. If only as a backup it’s not that big of a deal. A team definitely needs 4 RB’s on the roster to start a season. Keep him and players like Moore, Wilson and Clay. If they walk at the end of the year then the NFL probably gives you an extra pick for them.

“Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors.” Thomas is on his rookie contract, hardly plays and hasn’t been to the postseason. Not sure he’d factor in to a comp pick but he would use up a spot on the roster. He’s done nothing in three years and I doubt that changes this season. Miami would still have 4 with Moreno, Miller, Gillislee and Thigpen sooo…

I’d keep Thomas over Thigpen any day.

Thigpen is our kick returner. After the Moreno signing, Thomas is irrelevant.

Kick returner. OMG. He not exactly a great kick returner. We could use Lamar Miller or Richard Mattews as kick returner, they bothy are probably as good or better.
The Dolphins could pay attention to skills like kick returns when they draft their depth wide receiver or secondary player this year.
My point is that Daniel Thomas is a better football player than Thigpen is, and that saving 500 k against the cap is not a worthwhile reason to get rid of the better back.

And my point is Thomas no longer has a role on this team while Thigpen does. I’m not sure where your man crush on Thomas comes from but he’s just a wasted roster spot on the roster who has accomplished nothing in 3 years with the team.

And my point going back to the start of the thread is that smart teams don’t throw players away for nothing. He’s a serviceable player that could help in bringing a return at the end of his contract. I.E. a compensatory pick. You only get them if you lose players that have finished their contracts and sign elsewhere.
My other point is that he’s a more valuable piece than our crappy kick returner, who should be gone.

We might get a 6th/7th for Thomas, assuming anyone even signs him. They might not. Dude has been garbage. If Moreno is worth only 3 mil, than Thomas is worth an egg salad sandwich made in 2007 and left sitting in the sun behind a dumpster.

Frankly, if he had been signed away as a free agent he might have been the first since the compensatory system was developed to actually COST the team that loses him a pick…

    Sign DeSean Jackson!

Not enough cap room, we have big holes at OG and OT. We also need depth at LB and S. He brings more to the table than Wallace, but Wallace’s contract makes it unrealistic.
