According to reports, free agent tight end Dustin Keller will meet with the New England Patriots Wednesday. Dustin Keller signed a 1 year, $4.25 Million contract with the Miami Dolphins last off-season, Keller later tore his ACL, MCL, and PCL in his right knee in preseason action against the Houston Texans, setting him out for the remainder of the season.
Keller took a low blow to the knee by Texans safety DJ Swearinger, which left a lot of questions for Dolphins fans regarding illegal hits.
The Patriots who are having injury problems with their star tight end Rob Gronkowski, are bringing in Keller as a contributor behind Gronkowski. On Tuesday, Gronkowski stated that it is too early in his rehab to make any predictions for his ability for week 1.
On the other hand, Keller who is also coming off a significant injury has made it apparent that he is ready to return to the playing field.
Although the Dolphins are losing a veteran tight end, there is little concern over filling Keller’s void. Last season Charles Clay stepped up into the tight end position and surprised many, which may have made the Dolphin’s organization more comfortable in not resigning Keller. There has also been discussion over the Dolphins drafting a tight end in the upcoming draft. The Dolphins also have young depth at the tight end position between Michael Egnew and Dion Sims, who the Dolphins organization have high expectations for.
Whether or not the Dolphins draft a young tight end in the draft next Thursday, a player like Austin Seferian-Jenkins, or another player in a later round, the Dolphin’s have a tight end corps with high expectations.
Do you feel the Dolphins need to address the tight end position in the upcoming draft?
