WR Jonathan Aiken Attends Dolphins’ Mini-Camps

You have probably never heard of Rocky Mountain College’s WR Jonathan Aiken.  And I hadn’t either, until yesterday when a PhinPhanatic reader commented on a previous post I wrote regarding Rutgers WR Brandon Coleman.  My “inside man” (if he is reading this feel free to shout out, “It was me!”) informed me that Aiken is one of many WR’s working out for the Miami Dolphins at their Rookie Minicamps right now.

If there is one thing that automatically draws me to Jonathan Aiken, it is his NFL size.  The small school wide out is anything but small.  He is 6 foot 3, 225 pounds, which is shorter than Rutgers WR Brandon Coleman.  However, on top of that size and physical appearance, Aiken runs a sub 4.4 forty-yard dash.  That’s right, Aiken is a speedster on top of being a big wide receiver.

What Aiken does not have is a ton of experience.  His path to the Dolphins Minicamp has been rough.  He was originally set to play football at Florida State, until academic issues sent the wide receiver to junior college in Iowa, and then to the University of Wyoming.  Further academic troubles caused Aiken to end up at Rocky Mountain College.  That being said, Aiken’s skill set and potential are enough for NFL scouts to take a chance on him.

Aiken’s size alone (he would easily be the one of the largest wide receiver on the Dolphins’ roster) is enough for me to want him on the practice squad.  Not to mention the fact that he would also be one of Miami’s fastest receivers as well.  With a lot of hard work and time, Aiken could turn out to be the gem Miami passed on by not corralling Brandon Coleman.

Aiken’s workout tape and story can be seen here.

    He’s only 6′ 2″. You’re getting bad info.

    • Eric Roddy

just saw this too, and yeah he is 6 3. ill edit it! thanks for the heads up

      • dolphinmofo

        No problem

        • Terry Moore

We do need a big physical receiver…

          • dolphinmofo

Not saying we don’t but the original article had him listed at 6′ 6″

          • Terry Moore

6’6″ or 6’3″ is better than anything we have…

          • Eric Roddy

haha no need to argue, you guys are both right! 6 foot 3 and running a sub 40 yard dash is good enough for me… I’ll take that any day, and you know this kid would fight for every ball like it was his last! love guys like that rather than prima donnas!

  • LostSok

Interesting kid. Great post. He’ll be one to watch.

    • Eric Roddy

      hope he makes the squad!

  • tpl

I certainly hope he makes the team. He’d be great in the red zone. I’m afraid he’d be poached off the practice squad.

    • Eric Roddy

True, most likely by the Pats, who take every former Dolpin and turn them into a stud haha! Thanks for the read, and the inside info!

  • Johnny

Hey Eric.. Question?? Are you small time writers aloud to go to the OTAs tomorrow??? And if so, can you give us fans a play by play action and observations…

    • Johnny

Oh yeh… We better hope WR Binns makes this 53 then your long shot… Binns got size and was having a great camp last year before getting injured..

      • Johnny

And Binns is taller… Or the same.. 6’3..So your guy isn’t “easily the largest WR”… Plus there’s that Williams kid from Jax, who’s also taller..

      • Miami Jules (Julian)

I LOVE Binns (who I often call Mims for some odd reason)

        • Johnny

Funny you said Mims.. We all call cousin Michelle “Mims”…
But.. Telling you.. Keep an eye in Binns.. He was easily making the 53 last year before tearing his ACL.. Almost 100% today catching a 70yd Bomb TD from Moore over CB Taylor..

          • Miami Jules (Julian)

I remember your cousin since you corrected me once when I had made the same mistake, as a matter of fact, if I never make that mistake again, I owe it to your cousin, so next time you see her, tell her I thank her.

I can’t speak for this site, because I write for another site and on here I’m just another fan who occasionally reads and comments, but one needs media credentials to attend non-public events and practices on a limited basis when these aren’t closed even to the media, but as far as I know, Dolphins’ OTAs were closed to the media…”big time” or “small time” (doesn’t include post work out pressers etc.). We however, do get the “Webbies” weekend, when we get to meet at the Phins facilities over a 3 day celebration which culminates with passes to the game with really cool seats… last year it was Buffalo at Miami… we lost. :-(

      • Johnny

Hey… Jules.. Where do you write?? Let me know..

        • Miami Jules (Julian)

I’ll send you a message on FB because it is a different site from this one, and I want to be PC about it.

      • Johnny

It was open to the media ONLY today.. No access for awhile.. Probably till the beginning of camp.. I’ll go to a few practices.. Maybe we should meet up..

        • Miami Jules (Julian)

Definitely Johnny… we’ll work out the finer details once the schedule comes out, but I am down (as the kids of today say, which means “let’s do it”)

  • Miami Jules (Julian)

Eric, I can’t speak for the mystery reader but I know that as far as I’m concerned and for purposes of my final mock draft, a little chat we had about some Vol players, was instrumental in solidifying my position on Ja’Wuan James and veering away from “Tiny” Richardson. I consider the locals’ perspective an advantage and I was lucky enough to have gotten your input on these players.

    • Miami Jules (Julian)

PS I still can’t understand why, especially since he went undrafted, Miami didn’t bring Coleman on board as a UFA… I’m still getting over Ryan Swoop from last year, but in Swoops’ case, at least I know now why he was passed on… I should’ve listened to that other guy back then… the one from Texas… LOL
