The Miami Dolphins opted to sign free agent RB Knowshon Moreno this past off-season. He is supposed to be the challenger for Lamar Miller’s starting job. If early indications are anything substantial, Moreno may not be what the Dolphins were hopping for.
It’s early of course. We are only talking about OTA’s. Joe Philbin said his conditioning could be better. Armando Salguero said that Moreno was “a little thick in the belly” VIA Twitter. South Florida heat will quickly take care of that for sure. The question of his conditioning though should be a bit alarming. It speaks to a players determination and drive to succeed.
In Denver last season, Moreno put up his best season as an NFL runner but many believe his production was directly linked to the offensive output from Peyton Manning. A loaded up passing game that kept defenses from stacking against the run. In Miami, it’s not likely going to be close to the same. Regardless of the style the offense will run. Add to that the questions regarding the youth movement on the offense line and Moreno’s conditioning comes in to play a bit more.
As I stated earlier, we are very early in the process and Moreno will have the next two months to ready for his first camp in Miami. Weight room and dietary modification as well as normal daily workouts and Moreno should be fit and ready to go. Which then leaves us with the desire and drive. Moreno is playing on a one year deal so it is in his best interest to make the most of it in Miami if he wishes to make a statement for another team. Despite his very good season with Denver, the Broncos felt that he was expendable. Perhaps his off-season dedication may have been part of that reason. For now…too early to worry.
