Five Dolphins To Watch Heading Into Camp, Part One

There is a little more than a month left before the Seattle Seahawks host the Green Bay Packers to kick off the 2014 NFL season.  Until then, teams will undergo the stress of training camp, and must narrow down their roster to just 53 players before heading into the season.  There is arguably no other NFL team with more question marks than the Miami Dolphins, who spent both the off season and draft attempting to fill their many holes.  I will be focusing on the 5 Miami Dolphins I will be watching in the next month, starting with number five.

#5, Cortland Finnegan, CB

The Dolphins hit the free agent “jackpot” last year after CB Brent Grimes dominated the league.  In his first season after suffering an ankle injury with the Falcons that required surgery, Grimes totaled 54 tackles, 4 INT, and one huge TD against the Bengals.  Defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle is hoping they have found another gem in Cortland Finnegan, an aging corner who once was feared for his feisty play right after the snap.  The second corner spot is wide open across from Grimes, and it will be a battle between the veteran Finnegan and second year players Jamar Taylor and Will Davis.  If Finnegan can return to his old self, the job will be his to lose. Training camp is the perfect opportunity for Finnegan to show both the coaches and the Miami community that he can still perform at a high level.  A strong number 2 CB this season will be huge for two reasons.  First, it will give the defensive line and linebackers more freedom to blitz and try new schemes to get to the quarterback.  Secondly, it will make Grimes and the safeties better.

Stay tuned for my next Dolphin to watch during training camp, and FINS UP!
