The Miami Dolphins got a little boost to the center competition when back-up Sam Brenner returned to practice today. Brenner did well last season off the practice squad at guard but this year he is competing for a roster spot at center.
With Mike Pouncey injured, the Dolphins have tried Shelley Smith at the center position and that experiment has been a failure. So much so that Smith hasn’t taken a snap at center since being replaced by Nate Garner. Which by the way is o.k., Smith has never played the position on any level and is far more natural a guard.
Speaking of Smith, today the Dolphins opted to move some players around and opted to replace Branden Albert with Jason Fox, Daryn College at left guard with Smith, Dallas Thomas at RG and Ja’Wuan James at RT. Garner is still the center.
The return of Brenner isn’t going to make the team whole but it will add competition and could help Brenner develop faster or at the very least give the coaches an idea of what Brenner can bring to the position.
