Miami Dolphins Sign Joe Philbin Through 2016

ESPN is reporting that the Miami Dolphins have signed head coach Joe Philbin to a one year extension that will keep him employed through the 2016 season. The deal was not unexpected as many believed that both Philbin and Hickey would get an extension. It’s rare for coaches to coach without an extension on their final season of their contract.

  • The move gives the Dolphins Philbin under contract for another season without the need to negotiate a new contract should the Dolphins make the playoffs in 2015. Philbin could have asked for a lot more had the team made the playoffs this season with Philbin not being under contract moving forward.

“You don’t get the best from someone when they’re operating with a gun to their head,” Ross told reporters Monday.

Fans wanting Philbin to be gone can take comfort in knowing that the extension does not in any way guarantee him that he will in fact be the coach. Philbin is currently sitting on the proverbial hot seat following three consecutive seasons of missing the playoffs. Last year the Dolphins finished 8-8 for the 2nd consecutive season, their best record since 2008 when Tony Sparano took the team to a division title with 11 wins.

Philbin has been criticized for his game management, clock management, and energy level, or lack thereof. The Dolphins are committed to one more year with Philbin at the helm. Following last seasons come from behind victory over the under .500 Minnesota Vikings, owner Stephen Ross declared his coach would return. Philbin followed that confidence with two consecutive losses.

2015 is a critical year for Philbin and his staff but the contract extension gives the Miami Dolphins some security should Philbin turn the team into contenders. Philbin is 23-25 in his three seasons as the Dolphins head coach.
