10 Years Of Miami Dolphins 1st & 2nd Round Picks

facebooktwitterreddit

The Miami Dolphins will have made their first round selection by this time next week. A week from today they will be preparing for the 2nd round which has traditionally been the Miami Dolphins Achilles heal. More picks have been wasted in the 2nd round by the Dolphins then one cares to count.

More from Dolphins Draft

Which is why we count.

Today we are going to take a look at the last ten years of first round and second round selections and what they actually got out of them.

2014

1 – Ja’wuan James

2 – Jarvis Landry

Can Landry buck the 2nd round bust trend? So far he has and his work ethic is nothing short of spectacular. Landry was a huge surprise last year for almost everyone and he looks to be the lynchpin to the Dolphins wide-receiver future. James on the other hand didn’t finish the season ranked very high according to Pro-Football Focus but James had a very good year for the Dolphins and showed the signs of a future star. He also left his right tackle position to play left tackle for Branden Albert. Not a small task. He did well.

2013

1 – Dion Jordan

2 – Jamar Taylor

Lets just say it’s hard to believe we are only two (soon to be 3) drafts removed from the Dion Jordan trade. Jordan has played in a handful of games and has been suspended for eight. This year he hasn’t bothered to show up for voluntary workouts. In round two we took Taylor who started to show signs he was making strides at corner before his season ended to injury.

2012

1 – Ryan Tannehill

2 – Jonathan Martin

Tannehill is the future of the franchise and has improved every year since his arrival but while the team has confidence there are a lot of fans still waiting for him to breakout and show true franchise quarterback abilities. Regardless the team and his teammates are showing support in him and last year was his best as a pro with over 4,000 passing yards. Only the 2nd Dolphins QB to accomplish that. There is nothing to say about Martin.

2011

1 – Mike Pouncey

2 – Daniel Thomas

Pouncey has been a pro-bowl center and guard and just signed a new deal that will pay him around $45 million over five years. He has proven to be a valuable lineman and continues to get better. Daniel Thomas however is one foot from being out of the NFL.

2010

1 – Jared Odrick

2 – Koa Misi

In any other off-season Odrick may have been a priority signing for Miami but the addition of Ndamukong Suh made him expendable. Odrick was good and consistent in Miami but never became great. That could be in part to a system that revolved players in and out of the game at questionable times. Like Odrick, Misi has been good but not great and has played both inside and outside linebacker. His contract is up after this season so it will interesting to see if the Dolphins put value on him heading out of 2015.

2009

1 – Vontae Davis

2 – Pat White

Davis simply didn’t play well for the Dolphins. He was traded to the Colts where he has done very very well. While he showed glimpses of what he could do while with the Dolphins his work ethic didn’t mesh with the Joe Philbin philosophy. Pat White may be the biggest bust in Dolphins second round history.

2008

1 – Jake Long

2 – Phillip Merling

Jake Long was taken as the first Bill Parcells selection instead of quarterback Matt Ryan. Ryan has been steady as a starter, Long is no longer with the Dolphins and no longer with the Rams. Long battled injuries for most of his years in the NFL. Merling was supposed to be a pass rushing defensive end but never developed into the star the Dolphins hoped he would be. He never lasted past his rookie deal.

2007

1 – Ted Ginn

2 – John Beck

It’s ironic after all these years that Ted Ginn is still in the NFL. After being cut by the Dolphins he landed with the 49’ers and went to the Super Bowl, he then went to the Carolina Panthers where he continues to play special teams and sometimes wide-receiver. John Beck is out of the NFL and was shortly after being cut by the Dolphins. He didn’t make much more of an impact on the team as Pat White.

2006

1 – Jason Allen

2 – Derek Hagan

Allen had a decent NFL career he played in all 16 games each of his four seasons with the Dolphins. Derek Hagan didn’t last long in Miami, three seasons but has turned in a pretty nice career as a journeyman receiver. He has 10 years under his belt now.

2005

1 – Ronnie Brown

2 – Matt Roth

Brown was fun to watch for awhile but was far more valuable to the team as part of the Ricky Williams duo and as the featured runner in the Dolphins “Wild Cat” package that earned him pro-bowl birth. He has been a back-up since leaving the Dolphins. Matt Roth had plenty of energy but battled some minor injuries and never truly elevated himself to where he could have been. He left Miami to play for the Browns.
